    Don't Expect Much

    Office Staff (Former Employee)

ProsOffices share a building with dance studios; Raleigh community embraces the company; Donors and sponsors are treated with respect

ConsNot transparent with finances, although by nature a non-profit should be; Very dedicated Artistic Director but he needs assistance as he ages; No emphasis on marketing and PR

Advice to Senior ManagementRestructure the company to fit the budget; Take care of the dancers.

I would only recommend working there for a short time! Get your experience and move on.

    High turnover

ProsWorking in the arts is exciting and interesting. High level constituents and interesting performances. Artistic director has great vision for small ballet company.

ConsHigh stress work environment. No work-life balance - it's all ballet all the time. Low pay for mid-career professionals. Unreasonable expectations set and staff not set up to succeed.

Unduly stressful experience where catjhjering to unreasonable & unprofessional personalities

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsWorking with the dancers and nearly all of the artistic staff is a joy.

ConsThe ridiculous Diva personalities of the women on the board makes the dynamic between them and the staff one that fosters high anxiety and a "bend-over' atmosphere, preventing staff from just doing their job without drama. It also fosters similar behaviors among a few of the staff to the point that interaction becomes dysfunctional.

Advice to Senior ManagementLet the business professionals handle the business of the company. Instead of fostering conflicting directions, processes and multiple gatekeepers for every task, Artistic leadership should stop micromanaging areas you do not have expertise.

    My experience was mixed.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Raleigh, NC

ProsThe artistic product is really quite high and the dancers and staff are very committed to the company. The company has a very good board of directors.

ConsThe company tires to do too much. The company is underfunded for what it is trying to produce. Therefore, the dancers and staff are overworked and underpaid. The product at times looks very underrehearsed.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou need to examine whether you can produce the kind of product that you say you are producing (world class) on your budget. You cannot also claim to be world class without any objective measure of that term by outside sources. You're not world class simply because the artistic director says so.

    Telemarketing job

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThey only take 3 hour shifts - you couldn't do more than that

ConsNo training or support really. You're talking to folks and don't even know what you're talking about.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake more time with your new hires. Don't push sales over knowledge and excellence... felt like just another number - I'm sure turnover is really high and it could be due to lack to foundational training. Also sales support doesn't feel like part of the company. Take them around the studio. Help them feel like they're a part of what's going on, not just a piece of meat.
