    Pros

Training and personal development is a high priority. If you work hard, you will be rewarded for it. There is a good work life balance, but you have to be your own catalyst for it.

    Cons

Your specific manager has a lot to do with job satisfaction. If you get stuck with a bad manager, it could make life miserable because they set level of expectation and can either help you grow, or might feel like a roadblock. I was lucky to only have one bad manager.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be a partner with your employees, and not elicit fear. Happy employees get more done and stick around!

    Pros

Your manufacturing knowledge will grow. You can be your best motivator and if you have a smart boss, he'll let you find your high water mark no problem. The culture is there if your a self starter. I've been successful in this environment.

    Cons

The good ole boy network is alive and well. If you don't go along, you don't move along. My facility has drastically down sized. Nervous employees everywhere and many younger people have left for bigger and better opportunity. Aurora doesn't represent the corp as a whole but this facility is I bad shop both managerially and with asset reduction due to over spending. Closure???

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If this plant is to survive. Get ALL people on board by embracing the lesser crowd. Even you could learn and grow when we all work together. Or, just shut it down so we can move on!

    Pros

Lots of opportunity to incorporate new technologies into design. Worldwide travel.

    Cons

Leadership is poor and decisions are very short sighted based on manufacturing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work to improve the culture in the big three. Do more to understand who is providing value.

    Pros

Ability to see the work being done on the shop floor. Working with several other disciplines.
    Interface with shop personnel.

    Cons

I would need to have a cell phone in some cases, when present on the shop floor, to assist in a speedy response,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Great opportunities to move internally every 3-5 years. International positions available although getting harder to land. Interesting product that has a global impact on humanity. Generally high standards for safety and ethics. Competitive compensation, stable company although there have been some layoffs in the past 5 years. A true multi-national corporation with many interesting challenges and opportunities.

    Cons

With size comes some inefficiencies due to competing internal priorities, difficulty of communication, globally spread groups, etc. Majority of locations are not very 'sexy', tending to be in smaller cities or rural communities (may be a plus, depending on your preference). Culture and mindset tend to reflect the locations. Size, competition, and internal turnover make it difficult to foster a 'family' atmosphere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stay competitive, treat your employees with respect, and give them something nice once in awhile when they don't expect it.

    Pros

Some Superintendents were very enjoyable to work for. They truly cared about the long term success of Caterpillar
    Good salary and benefits.

    Cons

Not all Superintendents show the same ability to lead in an engaging manner. With leadership styles of intimidation, belittling and not showing GENUINE appreciation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be consistent, and transparent across the board.

Former Employee - Assembler in Aurora, IL

    Pros

Valuable experience can be gained here for other career opportunities in the future. The Caterpillar name still means a lot and is on of the most well known names in the business.

    Cons

Long hours, mandatory over time for indefinite stretches, and the constant worry of lay-offs, which in 5 years I was a victim of 2. You are treated like a piece of meat with little respect for you or your personal safety, and when injuries occur, and they will, Cats dr will always claim "it didn't happen here." My advice if you are ever employed there take your personal safety there as your first and foremost priority, do your 8,10,12 hrs and forget about that place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I know its a business but train your management to be at least knowledgeable about there position and what they are to do, and treat people with an ounce of respect.
