ConsI would need to have a cell phone in some cases, when present on the shop floor, to assist in a speedy response,

    Really depends on location

ProsLots of opportunity to incorporate new technologies into design. Worldwide travel.

ConsLeadership is poor and decisions are very short sighted based on manufacturing.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork to improve the culture in the big three. Do more to understand who is providing value.

    Good times and bad times

    Production Supervisor (Former Employee)
    Aurora, IL

ProsSome Superintendents were very enjoyable to work for. They truly cared about the long term success of Caterpillar
    Good salary and benefits.

ConsNot all Superintendents show the same ability to lead in an engaging manner. With leadership styles of intimidation, belittling and not showing GENUINE appreciation.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe consistent, and transparent across the board.

Lot's of opportunity internally, good variety of work, all the goods and bads of a big multi-national.

    Mechanical Engineer (Current Employee)
    Aurora, IL

ProsGreat opportunities to move internally every 3-5 years. International positions available although getting harder to land. Interesting product that has a global impact on humanity. Generally high standards for safety and ethics. Competitive compensation, stable company although there have been some layoffs in the past 5 years. A true multi-national corporation with many interesting challenges and opportunities.

ConsWith size comes some inefficiencies due to competing internal priorities, difficulty of communication, globally spread groups, etc. Majority of locations are not very 'sexy', tending to be in smaller cities or rural communities (may be a plus, depending on your preference). Culture and mindset tend to reflect the locations. Size, competition, and internal turnover make it difficult to foster a 'family' atmosphere.

Advice to Senior ManagementStay competitive, treat your employees with respect, and give them something nice once in awhile when they don't expect it.

Being Competitive in a Global Economy?

    Assembler (Former Employee)
    Aurora, IL

ProsValuable experience can be gained here for other career opportunities in the future. The Caterpillar name still means a lot and is on of the most well known names in the business.

ConsLong hours, mandatory over time for indefinite stretches, and the constant worry of lay-offs, which in 5 years I was a victim of 2. You are treated like a piece of meat with little respect for you or your personal safety, and when injuries occur, and they will, Cats dr will always claim "it didn't happen here." My advice if you are ever employed there take your personal safety there as your first and foremost priority, do your 8,10,12 hrs and forget about that place.

Advice to Senior ManagementI know its a business but train your management to be at least knowledgeable about there position and what they are to do, and treat people with an ounce of respect.

    Bumpy ride but still potential

    Supply Chain Analyst (Current Employee)
    Aurora, IL

ProsOpportunities for self starters during business upswings

ConsBusiness is cyclical and global footprint change is always possibility to eliminate current staffing levels at any given facility

Advice to Senior ManagementMake a change to the way management is treated in benefits because old reasons to spend your career at the company are now gone and will translate into higher turnover of top talent

    Wonderful team, very interesting projects.

    Manufacturing Intern (Former Employee)
    Aurora, IL

ProsGreat coworkers and upper management, projects are ever-changing and interesting, family-oriented company that is more understanding than most companies when it comes to having to miss work for emergencies.

ConsCompany is not doing so well right now, so they do not currently have many open positions.
