Caterpillar - Exporting Producs, Importing Revenue, a good place to call Home

Senior Engineer (Current Employee) Peoria, IL

ProsGood technical career path in most engineering areas. The sub-units (engineering sections) are run by engineering supervisors who have engineering degrees, so they typically understand the work they are dishing out..

ConsWay to focused on processes, it's like we believe Utopia can really work, and very little slack is given for non-conformance. Some managers are obsessed with "just follow the proces and nothing can go wrong. Everything will go wrong if we don't follow the process"

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on the product...implement the processes in a more sensible manner since there's good value in most of the processes we learn.

Caterpillar - world leader that is highly ethical and values people.

Engineering Manager (Current Employee) Peoria, IL

ProsCaterpillar is a global leader in its industry, and invests accordingly in people. People generally have opportunity to grow their careers in direction of their choice, have global mobility options, and I feel have genuine respect from top management. In addition, Caterpillar is extremely ethical, with management required to annually disclose any actions or situations they are aware of that are possibly in violation of their code of conduct. Every year, employees complete employee surveys that provide opportunity for anonymous feedback. Managers are evaluated on these results, and so are 'held to the fire' to be responsive to employees concerns,

ConsThe majority of locations are not in high profile urban areas, and so it is not convenient to include some of those advantages in personal life. For instance, Cat's global headquarters are in Peoria, Il. Peoria has 300k people and 1M in 60 mile radius, So, they only have minor league hockey and baseball, and arena football, and a university (Bradley) that doesn't have a football team. It is 3 hour drive to Chicago, St. Louis, or Indy. Other major locations are Decatur, Il, Lafayette, In, Raleigh, NC, and Aurora, Il. Intl locations are Grenoble, France, Geneva, Gossellies, Peterborough, UK., Sagami, Japan, and Piricicabo, Brazil - nice places, but again for the most part, are not the major metropolitan centers.

Advice to Senior ManagementBalance is they key. CAT management seems to trend toward the long term view in regards to strategic goals. However, it seems like short-term issues drive tactical decisions. 4th quarter restraints on hiring, travel, and capital investment are really counterproductive when it only serves as a bottleneck that forces people to compromise their progress for the sake of a couple months hold-back in progress.

Large company with many opportunities if you have the persistence and desire to pursue them.

Senior Engineering Specialist (Current Employee) Peoria, IL

ProsLarge company with stable employment. Layoffs are rare. Opportunity to work in a variety of locations around the world in many different types of jobs. Engineers in product development can be involved in all phases of the development process from design, to testing and production. It is very rewarding to participate in the design life cycle of Cat products.

ConsLarge company with resulting political issues. It can take a long time and a lot of people to get something done. Office environment is very bad. Large open office spaces with small cubicles and no windows. The company has become very process oriented, so much so that many times the implementation of the process seems to be more important than the results. 6 Sigma is still the mantra. Promotions can be difficult if a person wants to stay on a technical track and not move around to different jobs.

Advice to Senior ManagementConcentrate less on process requirements and more on developing people. Management should encourage development of technical roles with authority and responsibility.

A solid company but employees keep to themselves

    Engineer (Current Employee) Peoria, IL

ProsCompetitive salary, nice work environment, cutting edge technology is always a plus, you feel you are doing valuable work, you will become very competent at using the newest editions of related technology, very flexible work hours, many employees come and go as they please

ConsNot much time off, hard to get to know your co-workers (most are quiet, reserved and do not socialize outside of the office), unequal numbers of men and women but that is to be expected from an engineering company, problems obtaining software licenses for the amount of people using each particular program, some people commute from very far locations every day, not much opportunity for travel, you will be sitting in front of a computer for most of your day

Advice to Senior ManagementExpand the office space! Employees feel cramped and that there is always someone sitting right next to you. Encourage more social activities and opportunities to get to know your coworkers

Great company with good values, good pay, and lots of opportunities

Black Belt (Current Employee) Peoria, IL

ProsLots of opportunities to work in various work groups. Overseas opportunities and several work locations throughout the US as well. The pay is great, 95th percentile for most jobs.

ConsDiversity quotas sometimes hurt internal applicants who don't meet those criteria. Diversity is a great thing, but a lot of companies, including Cat, have swung the pendulum far left. It's a difficult balance.

Advice to Senior ManagementRight people for the right job, based on skill sets.

    Join Team CAT

Manufacturing Trainee (Current Employee) Decatur, IL

ProsLot's of opportunity for career progression within the company. Even with the poor economy CAT is still having record quarters. You can go all over the world with CAT. If you want to try diffent jobs there is always opportunity to change your career path if you want to.

ConsSome of the locations aren't the most glamorous. Most of the facilities are in Illinois.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey do a good job with supporting thier employees decisions. The only thing I would say is that upper management needs better communication between groups so capital projects can complement or improve other business areas.

Absolutely do not ever take an entry level position within this company unless you are closely related to management.

IT Analyst II (Former Employee) Peoria, IL

ProsThe only reason Caterpillar would be a good place to work is if you have a relative there who handed you a career you didn't have to earn.

ConsCaterpillar blatantly lies about opportunites for advancement.
Caterpillar has total disregard for state labor laws. Will blackmail employees whenever possible.
Caterpillar has no concern for employee satisfaction. If your unhappiness saves Caterpillar a penny, you won't be happy.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart paying attention to employee satisfaction levels. Employees who start in entry level jobs are told that the position is a gateway to better jobs. This is untrue, as entry level employees are simply taken advantage of until they quit. Better opportunities are strictly given only to those applicants who are related to someone in a position of power. It is not possible to earn advancement by hard work and good attitude within this company.

Great place to work, if you don't mind living in a small town

Manufacturing Trainee (Former Employee) Peoria, IL

ProsGood opportunities, great training programs for college graduates

ConsMost of the locations are in small towns. Little responsibility is given to younger hires. Too much movement throughout the company.
