    So much room for growth.

I have been working at Caterpillar Global Mining

    Pros

The supervisor are great. The hard work you put in doesn't go unnoticed.

    Cons

Like any factory, it's like being back in high school. People unhappy with their lives try to make your job harder. Also other people's laziness and refusal to earn a promotion who think it should be handed to them, are the biggest challenges you face there.

    Pros

Great pay and all study materials for certifications paid for. Thrown right in to job duites which was great to learn.

    Cons

Very bad on the job training, and no opportunitties to provide feedback for what you are doing. Everything is done in a very conservative and intimidating way that does not foster open and honest conversations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Listen to employees!

    Pros

Caterpillar seems as though it would be a good company to work for if the company views you as a traditional Caterpillar employee.

    Cons

The Management at Caterpillar has struggled in managing the changeover from one type of operating structure and system to the new operating structure and system.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

At a corporate level, review and identify gaps to improve the Change Management process employed when acquiring other companies.

I have been working at Caterpillar Global Mining full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Money was not bad at first, and use to be a great place to work for.

    Cons

No time for training, Safety issues out the butt, advancement not unless you blow really well. You wonder if you have a job every day because they walk people out for no reason. Raises that's a joke haven't had one going on 3 yrs, But CEO gets a big one as well as the share holders. Lack of communication between management and hourly and then there is the nasty word called Quality. Get it out the door at all cost, but don't forget the Quality what a joke. Get it out the door as quick as you can forget about the Quality it will get fixed in the field and we will get our stiff bonuses. This is the Cat mentality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your people like they are human no dogs! Wage increases even small ones, goes a long way. Let your supervisors do there job, and stop hiring fast trackers that tear the line apart do to lack of knowledge.

    Pros

Great coworkers and interesting and exciting products. A wide range of tasks keeps it interesting. Lots of opprotunities to learn. Decent benefits

    Cons

Management is incompetent, no resource management skills at all. Managers change constantly. Priorities are all over the board. Union sucks the life out of the company. Departments are pitted against each other, huge segregation and poor collaboration. Horrible morale. Many waste of time meetings that have no point. End of the year goals have not representation of actual work being done throughout the year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Manage your people and resources. Find out employees strengths and weaknesses and use them to your advantage. Have the guts to say "no" to meaningless union tasks. DONT FIRE LOYAL AND HIGHLY SKILLED PEOPLE FOR NO REASON

    Pros

    The pay is really good.

    Cons

New management doesn't seem to understand the complexity of the mining business. They give you goals that you must hit as an individual employee and as a division, but don't make the tools available to achieve them.

    Pros

Good Pay and Benefits! Lots of Overtime!

    Cons

Let Union have a run of the mill. Dishonest and will do anything to save the company money.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Live by your CAT values! Everything looks good on the surface but reality is poorly managed and run business by people who make excuses rather than do what needs to be done.

I have been working at Caterpillar Global Mining as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

The building is adjacent to the Peoria County Courthouse, so being able to pick up a freshly cooked item at lunch time with the pushcarts was great.

    Cons

WAY, WAY TOO MANY "former mechanics" with 25+ years of industry experience were placed in 'managment' positions. While these guys were certainly incredibly skilled technicians with their service truck and tool sets, the few I interacted with didn't understand/comprehend language that is much beyond 10th grade English. Had to dumb-down nearly everything I ever wrote so the boss could understand.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the technicians on the trucks and let us young, more educated workers assume some of these lower management roles.
