    Slow career progression

Engineering Project Team Leader (Current Employee) Mossville, IL

ProsIts ok company with lot of laid back mentality among senior employers. Good for someone who doesn't like change and being challenged.

ConsConservative company and does not challenge the employees enough to excel. Not a risk taker when it comes to leading new technology.

Advice to Senior ManagementOffer more rewarding career for young driven engineers. "To many managers" with very less technical expertise.

Good pay, but probably not worth it

IT Analyst (Current Employee) Morton, IL

ProsVery competitive compensation package. Flexible work schedule (no clock watchers either), not many micro-managers. Good opportunity to gain experience and exposure to working for a very large organization and large projects. Great place to start a career for a few years and go somewhere else.

ConsVery large cumbersome processes that add no value to the business. Do not bother trying to improve processes unless you are in the right clique. Your ideas will go no where. While it may seem like everyone has a voice here and can make decisions independently, most decisions have already been made at a higher level and your effort and participation are usually wasted. Most managers and supervisors have no idea what kind of work their employees are working on. I am not even sure what managers do here. This is also not a real IT environment. If you like technical work, there is not much. It is mostly process related.

The culture here also does not promote learning or career development. Be prepared to do the same type of work for at least 3-5 years, despite what you have heard from any college recruiters. Any training or job moves will be denied unless you know the right people.

This has also been a very unfriendly environment from Day 1. Prepare to get the cold shoulder if you don't get into the right cliques. Some of the upper management also seems kind of elitist and typically not visible.

The location is also dreadful. Nothing to do: nightlife, culture, etc.

Advice to Senior ManagementUnderstand the work your employees do and provide them with the tool and training to excel at it. Provide on-boarding to new employees and promote job rotation and career development and help all employees understand the business that we operate. Also, have the foresight to take action when you are accountable for multiple projects that have the same goal and eliminate waste. Just don't create projects to give people work to do. Ensure that everyone has work that can impact the business in a quantifiable and positive manner.

Great Company to Build a Career

Senior Associate Engineer (Current Employee) Peoria, IL

ProsGreat pay, talented people, great bosses (my experience), they invest in people and training. Solid company with great values that they really stand behind.

ConsConservative culture, slow moving, bureaucratic. Location is the biggest issue for me and more and more folks. Very few opportunities to move geographically (especially internationally) anymore.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe flexible, think about your people, and what's best for the enterprise

Caterpillar has been quite an experience since the change of untrained management in Decatur Plant.

    Assembler (Current Employee) Decatur, IL

ProsThe learning experience is good, but management needs great knowledge of product.

ConsThey need to Temp lay-offs, should never had relied on one product. They should of kept Motor Graders and Power Trains.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey need to know the product and learn people skills. They made a bad mistake getting rid of Motor Graders and Power Trains.

    I shouldn't complain....

    Engineer (Former Employee) Montgomery, IL

ProsMy close work mates including guys on the shop floor were nice to work with

ConsMore resources dedicated to outsourcing than investing within. When large capital projects can be "sold" to management, it takes years to get done and is controlled by the accounts. WAY to many layers of useless, non value adding mid management.

Advice to Senior ManagementRemove the revolving door into and out of mid/high level management positions, develop some leadership continuity.

    Really depends on location

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Aurora, IL

ProsLots of opportunity to incorporate new technologies into design. Worldwide travel.

ConsLeadership is poor and decisions are very short sighted based on manufacturing.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork to improve the culture in the big three. Do more to understand who is providing value.

    Mechanical Engineer

    Engineer (Current Employee) Peoria, IL

ProsPay. Hope that is enough for you.

ConsSenior management are borderline criminal. Exploiting employees and favoritism for promotions is common here. They'll work you to the bone if you let them. Waaaaay to many employees near retirement that have basically given up and just show up to get a pay check. Unfortunately these are also many of the mid-level managers.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop thinking about how many more millions you need to get each year. You're riding on borrowed time and the quality of your employees is trending away as a result of your treatment.

    ProsStd salary with std befits,

ConsCAT is spread out too much that sometime 3~4 people work on same thing.
too much of middle management layers.
CAT has started standard practice of layoff in last few yr to look good on balance sheet. Employees are given layoff to meet commitment to share holders.
If you are joining CAT be aware of this situation.

Advice to Senior ManagementRemove too many layers of management. and promote actual working team.
Management needs to take care of their employee at same time when they are taking care of shareholders.

    Downfall is hours

IT Analyst (Current Employee) Morton, IL

ProsPay is good, vacation is good.

ConsManagement in IT did not care about personal time. They kept us to very unrealistic timelines and sacrificed any work life balance.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat employees like people, not a faceless labor force to do your bidding.
