I worked at Caterpillar full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

A good engineering company that is able to sustain because of the products that they have developed a few decades ago. The company offers good career opportunities and benefits.

    Cons

Too many layers in the organization and its hard to move up the ladder. Work pace is slow. Business units have their own goal and objective and compete against each other without working towards the corporate goal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Streamline the organization structure and reduce head count. Develop people to work as a team and willingness to come forward and accept additional/new responsibilities.

    Great experience as an intern

I have been working at Caterpillar as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The work environment was extremely encouraging and diverse. As an engineer, most work is team-based. They treat interns much like new-hires. People are friendly and are quick to help the interns. Workplace is clean and spacious.

    Cons

The location (Peoria, IL in my case) is rather boring. Office environment is quiet and bit dull. There isn't much to do outside of work, however Caterpillar will host a few social gatherings throughout the summer.

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    1. Job related training is available to full time and contract employees
    2. Depending on your education, pay scale and benefits such as 401K, vacation package are competitive
    3. It is relatively easy to change your career path regardless of your education and experience.

    Cons

    1. In certain facilities, after you reach to certain professional level, it is difficult to further your career because of lack of opportunities
    2. Leadership training is not offered to all full time employees. You have to reach to a certain salary grade before you have a shot at it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Leadership team at Joliet, IL lacks the basic fundamentals of leadership
    2. Some of them do not understand how to criticize and not diminish the efforts that were put in by the team
    3. Some of the management team members lack the education and experience for the job they are chosen for.

I have been working at Caterpillar as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

The group are willing to hire entry level people, and people in the group will not hide their knowledge, they will teach you everything you want if you show the attitude. There will be a lot of activities after work because Peoria is a small city and there is nothing else to do.

    Cons

Too many meetings and conference to attend. The working stress is high, leave work late is often. Peoria is a boring city, employees are all old age, fewer young people.

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    Stability, family-oriented, friendly, good benefits

    Cons

Middle management saturation, poor understanding of process, fragmentation between departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Incorporate solid UX methodology for technical decisions. This needs to be a top-down mandate. User experience research and documentation will make it so the end products are truly customer-focused. As it is now, senior management make technology decisions based on personal preference that may comply to a limited set of business needs rather than on overall customer experience priorities.

I worked at Caterpillar full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay and benefits like nowhere else if your in management or salary.

    Cons

There is a definite 'network' to get hired. Too many people who can use that network, but not really do a job well, will be your boss.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Should work on hiring process and red tape, but that's any large company.

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    They overpay, benefits not terrible.

    Cons

You will work with a lot of idiots who think a professional certification absolves them of having to produce quality work the first time. You will be surrounded by men everywhere you go, most of them with large egos and lazy work ethics. Bright, intelligent women are looked over for those who either look nice or don't truly speak their mind. You have to play "the game" to get anywhere you can make a difference, and nobody really makes a personal difference in their employee's lives because it is all about the bottom line. Whatever it takes to churn out a quarterly profit even if we are constantly mortgaging our future. CAT comes first, your life comes second and they do not at all practice what they preach.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Desperately need to promote women and not make them feel like they are lucky to have what they have or promote them just to meet a quota.

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Awesome resume builder and nice people. The schedule was extremely flexible and the work given to interns gives real experience that will make you a better engineer.

    Cons

Location wasn't where I wanted to be and just wasn't the right feel. I also didn't like that I worked in a different location than my team, making communication fairly difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For some reason the feel of the company was just behind the times. Could have just been my location though.
