I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Career Development - There are a lot of opportunities for career development.
Skill Development - As an engineer, you'll use and develop technical skills.
Compensations - The pay and benefits are good.

    Cons

Career Development - While there are a lot of opportunities, it can often take a while to move up in your position.
Management - There are too many layers of management. Higher level management is very disconnected from what's happening at the lower levels.
Financial Concerns - Management is very focused on improving quarterly returns, and is often short-sighted in their decisions. This company hasn't been around for a long time by thinking quarter to quarter.
Location - Many of the jobs are based in Peoria, which is not a terrible city to live in. However, Caterpillar is by far the largest employer here. It makes things difficult when the largest employer is town is not doing well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Caterpillar is a cyclical company. Management needs to recognize that the time to develop new machines often exceeds to rise in an economic cycle. Often new development programs will be funded during an economic boom, and then cut during an economic downturn. Management seems to focus only on the R&D impact to quarterly returns, rather than the emotional cost to the employees.

Old school and conservative, but a well known fortune 50 company. Not the worst, but not the best either.

    Pros

Looks great on your resume and can be great for gaining experience on your resume. Great benefits as well for full-time employees.

    Cons

Peoria Illinois is a bit boring. Very out dated systems that were created 25 years ago and still used. Promotions are very political.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seek to reward hard work instead of friendships. Also try to give more training to older workers who don't understand projects and programs.

Former Contractor - Project Manager in Mossville, IL

I worked at Caterpillar as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Training support is comparable to other Fortune 500 companies. I can't complain at all because they paid for approximately 90% of my MBA through their tuition reimbursement program. Internal CAT specific training is also respectable and well received by most employees.

    Cons

    - Management team is primarily a buddy-buddy based system. Good, highly qualified managers are not always selected based on their performance or competence level, but merely because they're connected personally or socially to other managers. This is unfortunate since managers should be the best and brightest employees of the company.
    - Pay and total compensation for various jobs is below average to average as compared to other Fortune 500 companies. My starting salary was lower than the starting salaries offered by other companies for a similar position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice to upper management would be to continue promoting from within so you can retain your best and most talented employees. These high performing employees will be the foundation of Caterpillar for years and years to come. Always promote the best and brightest employees based on their individual performance and personal fit for the job, not merely on subjective opinions and feedback from their peers. One's actions (results) always speak louder than their words (talk).

    Pros

Great opportunity to work in different areas and acquire new skills. Good pay and benefits.

    Cons

Too many managers, executive management needs to be more dynamic and should be open to embrace new technology. We deal with technology that gets obsolete just after few years of deployment. Slow career progression for engineers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to diversify our business, need bigger presence in locomotive business. Try to retain the young talented engineers, provide them with better career opportunities.

I worked at Caterpillar as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Senior management cares about the employees and looks for opportunities for career advancement through training and involvement in professional development.

    Cons

There are some people within management who have been around for a long time that could move along to open doors for others with more progressive views.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice
