    I worked at Caterpillar

    Pros

Wonderful organization to work for and the people are as friendly as can be. With all that said, the talent pool is very intelligent yet patient, for a newer person will get a lot of attention and shadowing while they learn to build the world's best machine's.

    Cons

Most of the facilities are in rural areas and there is a small range of housing and hotels to choose from. Also, there are times of layoffs and that can be very frustrating when working on a project and one day half the team is missing. Still, the work ethic and respect for one another regardless of your position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the the great leadership.

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Been here for a few years, the good times are behind it. The compensation is fair but definitely not over the top.

    Cons

You will get stuck in a job. CAT is a "global" company but if you wind up in Peoria IL you will not be leaving. Minimal jobs with travel opportunities. Internal job board is a mess, jobs open nobody responds and you sit and wait for months.

Too much management, too much red tape. CAT really is finding new and creative ways to screw itself over in the long haul in order to achieve quarterly results.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get with the 21st century. You are behind other companies in your field.

  7. Corporate Internship: Communications

Current Intern - Corporate: Communications in Mossville, IL
Current Intern - Corporate: Communications in Mossville, IL

I have been working at Caterpillar as an intern

    Pros

I was given a surprising amount of freedom and responsibility, with essentially no micromanagement from superiors. I was trusted to do quality work, and made to feel like an equal in my team. Another bonus was that my supervisor was flexible with my schedule. Most importantly, I was given a wide array of responsibilities, which enabled me to learn and grow in various fields.

    Cons

Due to my location (Mossville), I was separated from all other communications interns, as well as most other interns from various fields. Being so removed also seemed to impede on my opportunities, as there were opportunities for interns located in Peoria of which I could not take advantage. The corporate culture also seems relatively restrictive and divided between employment levels.

Lots of career development opportunities, but with many of the headaches of a large corporation.

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Career Development - There are a lot of opportunities for career development.
Skill Development - As an engineer, you'll use and develop technical skills.
Compensations - The pay and benefits are good.

    Cons

Career Development - While there are a lot of opportunities, it can often take a while to move up in your position.
Management - There are too many layers of management. Higher level management is very disconnected from what's happening at the lower levels.
Financial Concerns - Management is very focused on improving quarterly returns, and is often short-sighted in their decisions. This company hasn't been around for a long time by thinking quarter to quarter.
Location - Many of the jobs are based in Peoria, which is not a terrible city to live in. However, Caterpillar is by far the largest employer here. It makes things difficult when the largest employer is town is not doing well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Caterpillar is a cyclical company. Management needs to recognize that the time to develop new machines often exceeds to rise in an economic cycle. Often new development programs will be funded during an economic boom, and then cut during an economic downturn. Management seems to focus only on the R&D impact to quarterly returns, rather than the emotional cost to the employees.

    Pros

Looks great on your resume and can be great for gaining experience on your resume. Great benefits as well for full-time employees.

    Cons

Peoria Illinois is a bit boring. Very out dated systems that were created 25 years ago and still used. Promotions are very political.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seek to reward hard work instead of friendships. Also try to give more training to older workers who don't understand projects and programs.
