I worked at Caterpillar full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Excellent company to intern for. Offered lots of relevant experience and good exposure to a global company. Engineering team that I was working with was very friendly and the atmosphere and work ethic were very nice. Company cared about you as a person and didn't see just as a number on paper.

    Cons

Was a bit difficult to find enough work to do at the start but further into the internship I had plenty to do

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Nearly everyone I've come into contact at Caterpillar treated each other with a high level of professional respect. From upper-level management to worker bees, I always felt that each employee had the best interest of the company at heart.

    Cons

There is some sense of seniority, in that you must put in your time before getting promoted, but on the flip side, if you are good at what you do and continue to deliver, you will be given a competitive raise each year. In some cases there are empire-builders, though typically well-intentioned, it still happens.

I have been working at Caterpillar (more than 3 years)

    Pros

CAT offers slightly above average pay/benefits.
    Flexible schedule is nice.
Work with some really great people.
    Looks fantastic on a resume.
Good at luring young people in but...

    Cons

...bad at retaining young talent. In a group of 15 the average age is 10 years older than me.

Peoria is a terrible place to be young but perfect to raise a family. Perhaps that contributes to the retention rate.

Slow as a corporation to respond and take action.

    Overreacts as a corporation.

"All roads lead to Peoria" I have been told. Even if you get to leave Peoria you are eventually coming back.

Rotational program is a joke. Dont take the job due to it. Nobody wants to invest any time in a three month temp employee

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work with young people. In that group of young people you have hired probably sits a CEO and a few officers. I was told young people are mobile and leave, and that was the excuse to not pursue following up on retention. Pursue those people.

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay, Good work life ballance, 401K

    Cons

No chance at advancement, Healthcare and Retirment packages in decline

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cat has been good to me but once they have you they will not spend any more on you. It does not matter how much you contribute to the bottom line. If you want to advance be careful. Cat will string you along for years making ambiguous promises that they have no intention of ever keeping. Management is only concerned about protecting their own positions and managing risk. The rating system is there to give you an impression that it is fair. In fact 85% of employees are rated as average and only given a cost of living pay raise. You will rise quickly the first 2 1/2 years then opportunities will dry up. It is designed this way to lure you in.

I have been working at Caterpillar as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Great educational opportunities, opportunities to speak with and shadow pretty much anyone that you wish, and great hourly pay are all a part of the Caterpillar internship experience. You will get meaningful work, get to interact with other interns, and network with large varieties of people across the company.

    Cons

Caterpillar does not offer any type of housing stipend.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make it a priority to meet the interns and interact with them personallly.
