    Pros

Generally has a good team of people to work with, provides a wide range of experience with opportunities in many different fields and locations around the globe

    Cons

As with any big company, sometimes suffers from management shuffle. Upper management often makes changes for the sake of making changes.

    Advice to Management

Provide clear direction over an extended time period, not a 1 to 2 year outlook. Limit unnecessary change, especially when it negative impacts the productivity of employees.

    Pros

Starting pay was good. Paid for education at one time. Health insurance premiums were very low.

    Cons

Supervisors allowed to play favorites and make up own rules.

    Advice to Management

Don't only take input from Supervisor that is hardly ever around to see actual work getting done. Need better review process.

    Pros

Great people and good culture. Pay and benefits very competitive.

    Cons

Not a bunch of cons. Big organization has many challenges growing and competing in global markets based in North America

    Pros

Interesting and challenging work. Wide range of products to work on.

    Cons

Executive office is too focused on quarter to quarter performance at the expense of long term viability. Need to play the political game to advance.

    Pros

Very safety conscious company. The benefits package is in line with other large companies.

    Cons

I have had no opportunity to advance my career. But the mining undustry is in a real slump at the moment.

    Pros

Laid back, friendly atmosphere, flexible time schedule, hours usually stay to 8 hours a day. Advancement can be quick depending on department

    Cons

Performance-based compensation seems to be more tied to what group you fall in. Caterpillar seems to lack a lot of the amenities other large companies offer (gyms, restaurant options, somewhere to exercise a bit onsite, ergonomics of cubes). Upper management seems to think that shoving a lot of people in one space and giving it a special title qualifies for progressiveness. Locations for engineers can be overcrowded.

    Advice to Management

Recruiting is important and Caterpillar could benefit from making Caterpillar more attractive to new hires. Also, Caterpillar's opportunities for involvement have seemed to decrease as of late.

    Pros

The culture at Caterpillar is great, and it feels like you are part of a very large family. Co-workers are always willing to help, especially in an entry-level position such as this.

    Cons

Job descriptions don't necessarily match the actual job functions. You will wear several "hats" as opposed to specializing in your specific skill area, but this can also be a benefit early on in your career.

    Pros

A really great environment that is focused on safety and it is not just something that is said in a safety meeting then forgotten about . At Caterpillar "SAFETY" is a way of life.

    Cons

Really the only negative thing about Caterpillar is that they do not have a cost of living pay increase. Many employees strive above and beyond but never get pay increases. Really it makes those people feel real bad not to feel some appreciation.

    Advice to Management

Management should maybe do a little more to keep their skilled employees around. More often than not skilled employees feel unrecognized and underappreciated and move on to other companies when they had rather stay around if management would show a little effort at all that they care.
