Great educational opportunities, opportunities to speak with and shadow pretty much anyone that you wish, and great hourly pay are all a part of the Caterpillar internship experience. You will get meaningful work, get to interact with other interns, and network with large varieties of people across the company.

    Cons

Caterpillar does not offer any type of housing stipend.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make it a priority to meet the interns and interact with them personallly.

    Pros

It is a fabulous opportunity being able to work for the world's largest construction/mining equipment company. Being a large multinational, the possibilities are endless in terms of the direction of one's career. The company culture is very conducive to a productive work environment. Also, if you get the opportunity to get hired into a rotational program, go for it! This program is very good for working your way up the corporate ladder.

    Cons

As a contract worker, it may not be as secure as one would like. But the flip side is that you get to work for a well-known company which is a good resume-builder.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overall, I think that management is doing a good job at managing risk in the business environment. Part of risk mitigation is having a flexible work staff. In some areas, this has been thought of as a negative (by line workers in particular) but I believe if you educate employees at all levels about the TCO , overhead, etc. when changes and re-org happens, it might be a bit better received. Cross-training could also help with reployment as well.

    Pros

Good benefits, most coworkers are good to work with

    Cons

Weak in strategic management, Reactive cowboyish business culture

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Really needs to get good and proven outside technical talent in the middle to mid-senior levels (grades 24 to 29) where most of the issues exist at this time.

As a good example, CAT has spent billions on deploying SAP. It is now revisiting the deployment strategy 3+ years into this effort. Likewise the PLM strategy is a patchwork of purchased multi vendor platforms (from competing vendors like PTC and Siemens which may be hard to believe but it is absolutely true) and a homegrown engineering change control system that was developed in the 1960s.

This not surprising to many of us on the inside since we can see that the engineering and IT organizations are full of folks with out a proper 4 year engineering degrees or 4 year computer science / MIS degrees. This is true at middle and senior management levels in these functional areas.

Potential Investors will be well advised to dig deeper into the technical talent profile of Caterpillar to understand the many risks this creates for the foreseeable future.

    Pros

If you are a minority or considered diverse you will be promoted well above your capabilities.

    Cons

Only if you are a mid aged white mail. The leadership ib GIS is a joke and the place is being run by amateurs. It was so bad I had to quit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit providing advancement based on diversity and your perceved potential of an individual and base it on qualifications and results.
