I worked at Catholic Health System as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The workplace was welcoming and had potential to learn.
As a volunteer intern you get meal passes which is great for lunch.
Had activities to get the employees involved.

    Cons

If you do not have a car then time to travel is long.
    Unpaid internship

I worked at Catholic Health System

    Pros

Decent pay, great benefits. It is the main radon that people stay with the company. Never have to work more than budgeted hours.

    Cons

No direction, no vision. People leave at 4:59. There is very little motivation, and even less leadership. Do not value education.

Good opportunity to gain experience; little room for advancement

I have been working at Catholic Health System full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

First, let me say that I work in the corporate sector, not in a clinical capacity. The company is so large that your experience largely depends on the structure of your department and your direct supervisor.

I have had the opportunity to take on new responsibilities and gain new experiences and have been encouraged to increase my knowledge. My supervisor is generous in allowing me to take time off, as his way of recognizing my hard work. We get yearly cost-of-living raises.

    Cons

In my department, there is ZERO opportunity for advancement. There is no guidance from our VP or from senior leadership. We are severely understaffed. We are expected to do more work each year with the same budget and without an increase in pay except for minimal cost-of-living raises. Hard work is not rewarded through promotions or pay increase.

Senior management is not in tune with the real needs of patients. They'll throw around acronyms and talk about ACAs, without understanding that your everyday person doesn't know what these things mean or care. There is a perception that the general public cares about everything that Catholic Health does (they don't). Strategies are based on these misguided perceptions that are destined to fail. Management is old school and doesn't like to try new things.Things are done the way that they've always been done.

As stated in other reviews, many staff members are lifers and have not continued their education. As a result, their skills and strategies are outdated.

We must use PTO for holidays, such as Christmas and Thanksgiving.

Our insurance just dropped coverage for spouses, so if your spouse has an opportunity to buy insurance through his/her employee, then he or she cannot be on your insurance plan.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer more opportunities for advancement within the corporate sector. Communicate in a way that the general public can understand and that makes them take an interest in what is happening at Catholic Health - focus on how it affects them. Staff departments appropriately, or if you're going to stick to a skeleton staff, stop demanding more results each year without providing appropriate resources.

I have been working at Catholic Health System (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay is descent, I hear insurance is pretty good, but I do not have it personally

    Cons

I went back to school again to get more education and they will not hire me now since I have no experience! Make it impossible to continue working for them in that capacity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give new grads a chance how can we continue working for you if you will not hire us! Bosses should really learn what their employees have to do on a daily basis.

    Pros

Good Benefits, Employees are nice. I was able to learn many software skills through out my 3 years there.

    Cons

They did not know how to deal with Stress levels. I had a hard time with management not listening to solutions. They only took one side of the argument - management, they gave me no support or positive feedback. I was stressed all the time and felt that I couldn't talk to anyone.

    Pros

People are great to work with. Many employees have been there 25+ years.

    Cons

Too many levels of management and too much micromanaging

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let the employees take part more in the decision making when it involves the "hands-on" activities. What looks good on paper isn't always as good as it looks.
