I have been working at Cato Fashions full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedule with a close group of fun, non gossiping women. Depending on your store manager, you may even be blessed with a Christian manager. 20% discount on all merchandise .

    Cons

The lack of hours to efficiently run the store. Very heavy workload with minimum pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice is to really listen to your field staff. DMs don't coach your staffs to say what upper management want to hear, let them speak the truth. The unrealistic expectations may not be so unrealistic if they could speak the truth without being punished for it.

I have been working at Cato Fashions part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

20% Discount, Some of the customers are nice

    Cons

Store Managers are allowed to get away with pretty much anything because the District Managers always back them up, scheduling policies are not adhered to, low pay but high expectations (one of the lowest paying retail companies, 14% below average pay scale; store managers don't even make $30, 000/yr), raises are only 10-25 cents more added on to hourly pay (and are dependent upon store's performance for the year), not everyone receives equal pay (even if you have the same position), sister stores (Cato, Versona) get paid more, low payroll hours, usually only two people working in the store at a time despite it being a large store, in regular It's stores there is only one person working until 3 or 4 in the afternoon, leaving that one person to handle everything, little room for growth, everyone gossips, managers spend hours engaging in personal conversations on the store phone on the sales floor, very unprofessional, poor leadership. Most It's Fashion stores are located in bad areas because they target the urban demographic (although now they are changing the styles they sell), but no security is provided, dress code prohibits employees from wearing jeans and graphic tees, but the store sells both, not allowed to work for a competitor (which is any store that sells clothes), policy states that the company has the right to change whatever they want, whenever they want without notice, insurance isn't accepted everywhere and is expensive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should be required to attend seminars on stress management, multi-tasking, and professionalism and decorum in the work place. Scheduling policies should be followed; store managers are not the only ones who need time off on weekends. Two hour long conversations on the store phone is extremely inappropriate.

I have been working at Cato Fashions full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Paid time off, discounts, able to work around prior engagements, upbeat associates and higher-ups

    Cons

Pushing customers and having to say a paragraph to them as soon as they walk in! Not enough hours to go around, even with getting great scores on secret shops and good inventory turn-outs, the company is stingy. My pay rate for an assistant manager position? 8 dollars. I can go to Rue 21 and make 13 for the same position! People who are above you take their power for granted, and let it go to their head. Unprofessional higher ups, at times. Company is always pushing you to invest in stock. You have to wait 6 months after you get promoted to receive paid time off, way too long of a wait.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

District managers: Don't let the power go to your head. Yelling and cursing in front of 10 customers in the store and joking about how you love to go home and take a couple swigs of a certain beverage is extremely unprofessional, talking about associates you don't like is childish. We're here to work, not gossip.

John Cato: Payless, right next door? Pays my position 3 dollars more than what you're paying me. Rue 21 pays 5 dollars more. Maybe its time to rethink that, yeah? In one hour of work, I can pay for 2 gallons of milk.

Whoever is making us upset the customer as soon as they come in: THE CUSTOMERS DO NOT LIKE IT. The pricing strategy and online ordering pushes them away, why can't we just offer our help if they need it and let them shop?

Store managers: You deserve more money.
