    Pros

Cauldwell Wingate has done a lot of work toward improving the quality of their project management staff through hard work in recruiting and the implementation of CW University which is a periodic training class that they created and afford to project management associates. Via these means they are trying to improve and although it doesn't happen overnight they are making good steady progress. Cauldwell also is positioned to procure quite a bit of major construction work because of their financial status, reputation, and bonding and insurance capability.

    Cons

Management demands hard work from associates and that they be able to perform tasks that might not necessarily be in their comfort zone. Although this is posted as a Con, it is something that would be expected of a mid size company like theirs who runs a lean and tight organization without a lot of surplus personnel on hand.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work on the training and recruiting.

    Pros

It is a good company to work for when considering the benefits and perks.

    Cons

My training was inadequate and the hours can amount to 60 a week including weekends and nights unpaid over 40 hours.

  3. Complete Disconnect Between Main Office and Site

Former Employee - Assistant Project Manager in New York, NY

    I worked at Cauldwell-Wingate full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    A job that pays money.

    Cons

Pay, sick-time if part of your vacation time, 60 hour weeks for field supers and pms, superintendents have potential to be stationed at 12 different sites a year. potentially 3+ sites in a week. Expenses for parking?-perhaps but not likely. If you are within your 1st year you potentially will be written up for 2 consecutive sick days (even with doctor's note).

    Advice to Management

Get out into the field full time. Remove lazy people that are covering themselves are not properly reporting effort to Executives. Many unqualified PMs and Supers. Sons and Daughters of executives all over the company.

    Pros

Small, well structured teams allow for much transparency and opportunities to learn the full range of construction management.

    Cons

Some technologies are antiquated and require redundant work.

    Pros

-Family feeling where you get to know everyone at the company from the CEO to Interns within all of the company's various departments. Open door policy with Executives, which is rewarding.

-Exposure to all aspects of the CM industry (i.e. Field Supervision, Project Management, Estimating, Purchasing, etc.).

-Tons of Responsibility= Tons of room to grow and accelerate at a faster rate than at a large company.

-Great Benefits: Health/Dental (Company Fully Pays prior to being highly compensated), Life Insurance, Strong 401K Benefits, Yearly Bonus.

-Main office location across from Grand Central makes for easy commuting.

    Cons

-Overwhelming level of work at times.

-Working on multiple jobs under different Executive's makes for difficult communication at times, especially if you are caught in the middle.

    Advice to Management

-Continue the training programs, as they offer a lot of insight one might not get on their specific project. They have been very successful so far.
-Develop ways to increase team chemistry and company spirit. (I.e. company team)

    Pros

Varied and interesting work, some commercial, health care and institutional. Not engaged in shady business practices.

    Cons

The President (and upper management). Everything runs on her whim. Senior executives almost afraid to go to the bathroom without her permission. She actually told me that the COO "didn't have the authority" to make a REALLY minor decision. Micro-manages employees to death, rules change almost hourly and many hours and days are wasted on wild goose chases initiated by the President, under extreme pressure to deliver impossible results. Expect 60 hour work weeks and dirty looks if you leave the office before 6:30 PM. If this was my first job out of college, I would have quit the industry and went back to grad school.

    Advice to Management

Nothing to change; they are set in their ways.

    Pros

    - Generally field supers are very knowledgeable, and usually the best representatives of the company
    - Administrative staff very helpful / accessible
    - Company rarely has a down period, always steady work
    - Has a great site safety program

    Cons

    - Constant feeling of "treading glass floors"; Have seen very qualified employees fired for situations out of their control (see below)
    - Project managers often have a severe disconnect with the situation in the field; a few have been known to throw those below them under the bus whenever there is a problem
    - Company routinely expects you to work on weekends w/ no compensation on your salary base rate. Worse yet, the projects covered are often not even your own
    - Estimating consistently comes in underbid, as some projects have barely budgeted labor, leaving you to sometimes do the dirty work yourself
    - Promotes site safety, but a PM will admonish you if you throw off a sub for not having his OSHA card, siting project delay. However, if you DON'T do it, and the internal site safety officer catches it, you will be in trouble either way.

    Advice to Management

    - Bridge the disconnect between the field and the management; there are some serious miscommunications that have occurred that have wrecked jobs

    - Fix the situation with the site safety, as it's a great program. However, there has to be consistency with how basic things are handled, that does not make the super get in trouble for following the rules.

    - Could still be great, just needs to tune up "in house" affairs

    Pros

Some co-workers and I lucked out with a decent boss

    Cons

They don't recognize the good work and effort of their employees especially guys in the field. Without us, you're nothing. We never se management until there's a problem.

    Advice to Management

Take the time to make site visits and see what's going on and how hard we work then reward and recognize. Respect the long hours and manual labor we provide so you can sit in your office and collect.
