I have been working at Centene full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Small employer feel with huge growth opportunity if your looking for career advancement. Caring, smart co-workers and leaders with a drive for success. Competative pay.

    Cons

Growing fast so feeling some growing pains. Needs more job aids, procedural structure and formalized training programs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get more face-time with your staff, do regular 1:1s (don't cancel them every week!). People need to know their leaders are there and want each individual to succeed. Put succession planning in place ASAP!

    Pros

    Good pay and employee benefits.

    Cons

Overworked and under recognized. Management does not listen to employee suggestions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow formal training for new positions. Upper management should poll and listen to feedback from subordinates. Ends justify the means...

I have been working at Centene full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Lots of opportunity to take on projects that you are interested in.
Easy to become a SME in an area that you want (be warned; you will be the SME forever after!)
Benefits are good, especially the health benefits if you play their “healthy pathways” game.
Ok work/life balance and option to work from home IF you management allows it.
Ability to set your own goals and path (don’t expect management to tell you how to progress within the company or help you)

    Cons

Don’t expect any help or direction from management. They are shuffled around or quit so often anyone below them has little hope of moving up in the company. Making friends with upper/senior management is the only way to be promoted.
Random after hours work. Other teams expect you to support their technology at a whims notice!
Very important Employee Engagement Surveys were conducted last year (2013) and most IT departments failed miserably. Management promised changes. Nothing has changed. Another survey was just conducted for 2014 and Management & Upper Management literally forced employees to complete it. Results will most likely be way worse than last year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

INVEST time into your employees and not your own agendas.
PLAN ahead. Leads know about project deadlines months ahead of time, but wait until the last few days and everything is a firedrill (literally!!!)
PROMOTE from within and STOP bringing in contractors to fill a “gap” and end up hiring them for a position above current employees that have been READY to be promoted for months or years.
PAY employees consistently and competitively. Salary for a more competent engineer on one team can vary $10-20k less than an incompetent engineer on a similar team. Trust me, I’ve had very candid conversations with employees and managers that have quit because of this unfairness!
Enjoy life, let your employees enjoy theirs and be able to support their family. Grow from within and encourage communication between teams, managers and business partners.

    I worked at Centene

    Pros

This company allows for growth, however, the PDM Department is very messy.

    Cons

Centene as a whole has a lot to offer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The managers spend a lot of time having employees work in a leadership role, but when it's time for promotions, those are the individuals who are passed upon. Often times, your promotion depends on your relationship, not your level of education, or hard work and dedication that you give to the company.

I have been working at Centene full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The salary and benefits are good and the people are great. My manager cares and the overall work environment is positive.

    Cons

Very little flexibility in the schedule. I wish we could work from home but the culture is a little old fashioned.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please let us work from home! The company loses good people because they leave to work at other companies who allow telecommute opportunities.

I have been working at Centene full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The company is very successful and continues to grow in an otherwise stagnant area. Benefits are on par with other top companies (although they were better just a few years back). If you like a challenging, face paced environment, you will be very happy here.

    Cons

The company just pays lip service to "work/life balance". There is often over commitment to new business that forces the IT division to work overtime on projects.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue your campaign with the employee satisfaction surveys. Act on them and not just provide lip service to the criticisms.

I have been working at Centene full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Pay good but when you figure out how many hours you are really working its not worth it

    Cons

case load is extremely heavy--unsafe and I have a license to protect
Mid management gives different answers and it is confusing
    No work-life balance
Mgmt doesn't care about Care Manager developing a relationship with members--just numbers and stats and produce, produce, produce like members are a bunch of cattle

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do you even know how mid management treats us?
To upper management--we have supervisors with no degrees or bachelors degrees managing us LSW's/MSW's and LISW's. This is reportable to the social work licensing board.
Why are our caseloads 800-1000 per social worker? Really? Unsafe!!!!
