    No corporate mobility

    Senior Service Representative (Former Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsThe company will be around for a very long time, very stable. The pay is reasonable and they a have a fairly decent union on the electric side of the company.

ConsThey do not promote pass entry level management. Very few people actually get a chance to move up to the corporate level even if they are qualified. The natural gas side of the company has a very weak union and has a strong "Good ole Boy" system in place.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe company really need some diversity at the corporate level. There is a real disconnect between your field employee with college degrees and upper management.

Billing Department had low morale -success was tied to minimun call times not answering customer's questions thouroughly

Advanced Customer Service Representative (Former Employee)
    Minneapolis, MN

    ProsPay and benefits were decent.

ConsNo positive comments by management. They didn't care about answering the customer's questions correctly in one call. Instead customer's were many times treated rudely and given little information, which led to multiple call backs/call volume.

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote or hire qualified people to supervise not just those who have put in the time.

Looking forward to many years with the company.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsDecent salary, benefits and paid time off considering the demographic area. Relaxed and casual working atmosphere. Definitely a place for longevity.

ConsIn some pockets there is the good ole boy attitude. But 75% of the people I work with are kind and helpful. Unorganized at times.

Low performance culture with lots of politics

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsIf you are smart and have zero ambition or drive OR you're not very smart but like to play political games, this is your place.

ConsA group of 50-somethings who have been working together for 25+ years are focused on playing games, not managing the business. Good thing they have limited business skills. Unfriendly to outsiders.

Advice to Senior ManagementHold a lottery and send every other person home. Gas system pressure and electric service? The same. Shareholder value? Increased, Ratepayer value? Exponentially increased.

    Stable, slow to change

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsThey're not going away anytime soon. Fairly innovative for a utility. If you like it, you can stay as long as you like. The people are nice and have lots of spare time to help anyone who asks.

ConsUtilities are generally not very innovative. Decisions are very slow, involve lots of people, boat-rocking is not welcome. Most of the company has been there forever, and without market pressures, it operates like a 1980s organization.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop looking at what other utilities are doing, and look at what other companies are doing...the rest of the world has become leaner and more efficient out of necessity.

    Positive internship experience

    Intern (Former Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsCNP values their co-ops and interns. You're treated like an actual employee and work on projects that contribute to both the company and your learning. In addition to the facility tours and Lunch & Learns, they offer plenty of networking, professional development, and volunteer opportunities. Managers are approachable and co-workers are always willing to mentor and share their knowledge. Overall, it's a great place to begin an internship or co-op.

    ConsNone. Didn't experience anything negative.

    Waste of time

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsCan't think of anything at all.

ConsThis is the most political company I've ever seen. Nothing gets done in a straight forward way. It all depends on who you know and, worse, who you are related to!
