I worked at Centra Health full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Steady income.
Kind, caring, friendly employees from EVERY department in the hospital.
Most of my own department coworkers are amazing!
I NEVER have to work there again!

    Cons

Pay as compared to other large healthcare companies in our area.
Incompetent management in the department that I left. I understand this is not an isolated problem at Centra.
Lack of job security as fear of being fired every day per MANY current and former (including myself) employees.
Lack of support for staff from said managers.
My former managers were vindictive and unprofessional on many occasions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

One of the largest departments of nursing at Lynchburg General Hospital needs a complete management change. If Hospital Administrators would look at the rate of turnover within this department within the last year, perhaps they would notice something is very wrong there.
Acquiring the latest medical property within 100 miles seems to be the priority of the current Centra Health, not employee retention / satisfaction. What a shame, you have MANY wonderful and competent employees there. Treat them as if you are PROUD to have them and do everything you can to keep these good ones!

I worked at Centra Health full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Most of the people there are genuine and want to be there, it is just not a job. Most of the people who are caregivers like what they do. People in other areas are helpful, nice, speak to you and help people who have that lost look on their face.

    Cons

Some managers have higher expectations. There is still some of that "Good Ole boy" mentality there. Some managers are awesome and have your back, but you have to show them you are worth your weight.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is no such thing as promotions except when annual evaluations occur. Management has become too top heavy again like it did many years ago. There are some people who have been given second chances in different positions, try giving a few more. It's not always about the money. Change is good.

I worked at Centra Health full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible scheduling at times, some supportive management, ok benefits, fast-paced days that makes work time goes by faster (due to the nurse/patient ratio, you're ALWAYS drowning in your work), physicians are great to work alongside, centra attempts to become active in the community and outlying areas

    Cons

mandatory overtime, removal of early commitment bonus for extra hours an employee would sign up for before schedule was made. Opportunities for advancement were very political, even if the right candidate was "clear as day." HR was very difficult to work for and would also not back up an employee when faced with a work dilemma. Be prepared to "do more with less." Seems as though more marketing was done to attract new nurses rather than satisfy current employees. Centra nurses are stretched very thin and expected to do all and act in all roles with a micro-managed smile on their face to give "excellent care, every time."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better compensation for all employees, especially nurses.

    I worked at Centra Health

    Pros

An easy job. You spend most of the day sitting and waiting for a client to act out. Co-workers are easy going and it is a team environment for the counselors.

    Cons

No state required training given prior to employment. This is a problem when you work with individuals with developmental issues. No possibility of advancement and a poor benefits package for a health care company. Very poor pay with no possible advancement even with additional education. Tuition reimbursement that they offer is nearly impossible to have approved.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop cutting corners and give employees the type of benefits that Centra claims they do.
