I have been working at Central Steel & Wire full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

decent pay for warehouse employees for the kind of work that they do

    Cons

not very friendly to the maintenance dept. pay is the same as a laborer, but work is more dangerous, they expect all repairs done during the week don't want to pay overtime and don't care about employees welfare, also bring in outside contractors to do work and keep maintenance people at home. hire incompetent people to be maintenance supervisors and expect you to be satisfied with that

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

get rid of the person in charge of maintenance and repair your equipment on down time so you won't have any down time during the week

I worked at Central Steel & Wire part-time for more than a year

    Pros

35 Minute paid lunch, $120 paid boot voucher, extremely helpful full-timers who will take you under their wing, and caring managers who will give you a chance, and are generally lenient.

    Cons

If you're part time, that's pretty much your job title. I was part time for a year, after being assured I'd get hired after 90 days. No benefits, and with a job as potentially dangerous, and strenuous, as this, you need all the benefits you can get. Literally everyone, even the janitors make more than you, and if you get the wrong manager, you can languish at one station without ever progressing and learning anything new.

As part time you make around $300 every two weeks, split into weekly checks.

I have been working at Central Steel & Wire

    Pros

Good culture, nice people, great training. It is overall a good company to work for. The company offers good benefits.

    Cons

No chance of promotions. I was brought in under the assumption of being promoted within two years and was never given that option.

I have been working at Central Steel & Wire full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

decent top pay, paid vacation, paid work boots, once you know what your doing it become second nature.

    Cons

favoritism at its best. old equipment, poorly maintained, crane is older than dirt always breaking down, exhaust fans never turned on, when 95 degrees inside warehouse, poorly managed material. not sure how someone can retire from here after 40 years without having serious health issues!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

not likely, only few management positions and a lot of people before you!!!

I have been working at Central Steel & Wire part-time for more than a year

    Pros

You get to know some good people at this company and get a lot of experience at this place.

    Cons

I worked at this place for 2 years and did not recieve no full time position. Their is a lot of favoritism with in this company, so basically you have to know someone to advance as blue shirt. Supervisors are unfair and treat people poorly to say the leasat.

    Cons

No chance of full-time or any kind of advancement. they don't appreciate the hardworking part-timers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Current Employee - General Laborer in Chicago, IL

I have been working at Central Steel & Wire

    Pros

It's a job that pays every week, full time employees are great to work with and generally cares about new part-time employees safety, eight hour shifts with a paid thirty minute lunch. Many drivers are helpful and respectful towards new employees.

    Cons

Some equipment is very old and unsafe, many of the jeeps that are used by dock workers have poor brakes at best and are unable to stop. No sick days, pay raises, holiday pay, work weeks consist of two days one week and three days the next totaling forty hours. When hired we were told there may be a chance to become full time depending on the economy, but since then no such luck to part timers who have been there 6-8 months. Part time employees are thought of as garbage because there is an abundance of other applicants. Full time employees are desperately wanting to retire because of senior management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try showing more respect to your subordinates at all levels, stop wasting so much paper and promote some part time employees to full time; the consistent hiring and firing of part time employees and having them quit when they find full time work elsewhere is seriously killing morale and costing the company more money, and maintain the machinery better or replace it, not being able to stop a vehicle pulling 2,000 lbs is very dangerous.
