Good for entry level sales, limited on development and growth potential

    Advertising Account Executive (Former Employee)
    State College, PA

ProsGood employee camaraderie, access to reasonable technology, McClatchy Interactive does provide updated training on digital media for Centre Daily Times and all its other properties

ConsLimited commission potential for sales, reduced skeleton staff makes job harder to accomplish with its overload of assigned tasks, industry is not growing or redeveloping itself fast enough to stay stable in the face of changing media environments

Advice to Senior ManagementTo gain a better understanding of coaching and mentoring, along with better business practices. Lessen the "fear factor" approach of employee mentoring to dissolve the already existent toxic environment

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

    Mismanaged, declining revenue and readership

    (Former Employee)
    State College, PA

ProsGreat place to gain experience and learn new skills to take elsewhere, particularly since the newspaper staff has been cut over the past few years.

ConsBadly managed organization with poor corporate oversight. Print business is on its way out, but digital products and competition are not being aggressively or realistically targeted. The entire organization is stuck in an outmoded and reactionary mentality. "Out of the box" problem solving is actively discouraged. The organization is afraid to take risks, despite rapidly losing revenue and readership with local competition.

Advice to Senior ManagementReplace all remaining senior management that hasn't left for better opportunities. Managing declining revenue through layoffs and cutting budgets needs to be coupled with a serious effort to bring in new advertisers and increase readership. From the top down, there needs to be more diversity in motivational tactics, beyond yelling and bullying current employees, in order to have them perform to expectations

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Great company

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    State College, PA

ProsGreat sales leaders, good vision, willingness to transition into 21st century. Great family atmosphere in the company. Excellent opportunity for growth.

Conspoor pay. poor structure. needs more flexibility to qualify sales. Newspaper is date. Editorial lacks innovation. Very terrible website interface.

Advice to Senior Managementkeep moving forward. Take the right next steps to innovate. Don't be afraid to downplay the quality of the print.
