    Pros

    Good benefits.
    Good work/life balance.
Many good employees to learn from.
    Good product.

    Cons

Not a good place for women or minorities in management.
Advancement requires being a yes man.
HR policies are arbitrary and not friendly toward women or minorities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retire, and let someone take over who knows how to hire and keep good managers.

I have been working at Cepheid

    Pros

The health insurance is really good, manufacturing environment is fast and active. Always work available, systems look like the processes are established. As other reviews have said a great place to start a job in Medical Devices. However, for someone with experience in this field I would recommend careful consideration and weighing out pros and con's. Overall pros: Good Benefits, Stock Grant, and flexible experienced employees.

    Cons

Some of the challenges are getting clear directions. Senior staff Directors / Managers very inexperienced in the Device Industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Closely look at department budget discover where your inefficiencies are. I see a lot of work waste and poor management of very experienced educated employees who can do more. I don't think middle management has training and work experience, to reduce waste and inefficient use of time. At least from my perspective.

    I worked at Cepheid

    Pros

The fellow engineers are patient and helpful, and they are very willing to spend an hour to help you even though it's not actually related to their personal duties. Most people I met were friendly and nice, and I felt welcome.

    Cons

You might need a rather high position or strong background to make your opinion matter--but that's kind of true in many other places.

I have been working at Cepheid full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The people (for the most part) are great, benefits are good, and the product truly is incredible.

    Cons

Upper management seems to have unrealistic expectations for productivity, and the reluctance to invest in additional resources is crippling and demotivating for those who are working so hard to meet deadlines. People who have been promoted from within aren't getting paid what people get when coming into similar positions from the outside. The morale is low...and not much is being done to improve it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the people who work for you (and not just the ones agreeing with you). The ones who work in the trenches know about the daily pains faced and can help improve processes. Compensate the people you have promoted from within - we find out about how much more people earn when they come from another company, and it's demotivating to hear. Reward the good, don't just penalize the bad.

I worked at Cepheid full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Growth Company - if you can negotiate your incoming salary. Then you might have enjoy. With growth comes opportunities, as long as they are willing to hire from within. Good medical and dental plans, but compensation is something to be desired.

    Cons

    No Work-Life Balance
Compensation - terrible after you join
Leadership opportunities - minimal, prefer to hire from outside then hire from within.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your own employees better - they are the ones that have allowed you to grow 20%+ year over year.
Give them opportunities to advance, and understand that you are in the silicon valley - where rent & expenses are crazy due to the tech companies. Do something in the form of compensation to the employees that would be worth it for them.

    Pros

    Nice colleagues and beautiful landscape.
May give opportunities OUT OF the current department.
    It's an experience.

    Cons

    Too many admin tasks.
Advices for job/tasks-improvement asked to employees, but not currently taking place.
Zero carreer perspectives inside the department: the employee has to apply to other departments to have an increase in salary or be "upgraded".
Good profiles covering the wrong positions.
