I have been working at Cepheid (More than a year)

    Pros

Not a boring moment. Plenty of work and internal movement possibilities.

    Cons

Constant movement in Management (US Sales EVP changed 4 times in past 2 years). With each change different focus and direction was given. Originally hired for one position and moved (without any input from employee) 3 different groups and 4 different managers (6 if counting dotted line management) in 2 short years.

    Advice to Management

When re-org make an attempt to ask where employee wants to go. Just because one has the skill set to do the job doesn't mean that is the position that will make the individual most productive or happy.

    Pros

Innovative technology and solid client services.

    Cons

Aggressive and mean spirited management. They do not reward achievers but followers. Lack of diversity.

    Advice to Management

Time to move out the "old boys" network and bring in fresh talent.

I have been working at Cepheid full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

All the mundane things the sheeple go to work for are taken care of. Pay and benefits are just fine, 401(k) contributions are matched, ESPP available if you've got a few thousand bucks in the mattress (I don't). Cohort is generally nice, if in a very middle-American-office vein.

    Cons

Consumable operations - the folks producing the GeneXpert cartridge, the company's high-volume product - is a rudderless ship. No MES or other functioning data system exists to comprehensively track failures, which doesn't lend itself to troubleshooting the myriad serious problems plaguing the operation. The whole manufacturing workflow is a held-over afterthought from the early days (10-15 years ago) and has not, to date, been revisited. The raw materials and finished product are rolled around the building in plastic trays, Ziploc bags, Tupperware tubs and the like, fine for expensive parts but utterly inappropriate for a factory attempting to produce units in the hundreds of millions per quarter. Recurring equipment failures and poorly-conceived mechanisms are common and no program (CIP?) is in place to improve or eliminate them. The overall impression is that management is so enamored of their game-changing "help the world" nature of the product - which it doubtless is - that the niceties of a controlled production process are lost on them.

    Advice to Management

You've got some smart technical people at your disposal. Leverage their skills toward solving actual problems, not useless make-work projects or (worse yet) paperwork. Then again, you're probably too busy trying to inflate the company's market value in preparation for selling it off. Best of luck with that.

    Pros

Great technology, great people. Competitive benefits package. Mo micro management, once you show you know what you're doing.

    Cons

A bit too old school. 401K could be better. Working from home is more of an exception (for those who absolutely needs to work from home, forget it)
