    I worked at Ceradyne

    Pros

Some of the best people I could have ever worked with. They were like family to me.

    Cons

I can't think of a reason why I would recommend Ceradyne to a friend.

I worked at Ceradyne full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Ceradyne is a huge company and very secure. The work they do is also fascinating and lots of potential for growth (especially in engineering).

    Cons

They were extremely rigid with a very unfair point system that can be used against you if you were "tardy" more than 3 times, etc. Not really a very free or fun work environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Treat your employees better.

    Pros

Pros you get a pay check and benefits.

    Cons

They promise you bonuses but make it contingent upon employment, then terminate you before pay out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change your contingent upon employment policy and stop robbing those who dedicate themselves to you. Bad form Ceradyne.

I worked at Ceradyne full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I was well trained, my duties were always explained to me. I was never asked to do anything beyond my capabilities without proper training.

    Cons

The biggest downsides to working at Ceradyne is the heat in the summer, the cold in the winter and the general dirtiness, but it is a factory and Ceradyne always tried to improve condition.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listening more to the people who have to work with the equipment.

    Pros

Great bonus program, and mostly good people to work with

    Cons

When the broke up engineering, and put an inexperienced non engineer in charge of my engineering section, things went down hill.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't break up a solid engineering dept into separate groups.

    Cons

some things not OK. many employees have that 'deer in the headlights' look.

I have been working at Ceradyne

    Pros

decent pay and good benefits, but this doesn't make up for what you'll go through to get it (see cons).

    Cons

Ceradyne Defense has no problem hiring a dozen managers, but balks at hiring people who actually produce the parts.

The end result is that if you're a "worker bee" at Ceradyne, you are required to work 12-16 hours per day, 7 days a week, including holidays.

Worker bees also have no access to resources because the managers and supervisors are tied up in meetings all day long, every single day. This tends to cause confusion and delays in production on the floor. Of course, the worker bees are held accountable for the chaos.

Also, several of the managers are verbally abusive and use threatening language to "get their point across". The solution to all problems is to throw more paperwork into the mix, which creates more problems, which creates more paperwork, and on and on and on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overall this is a horrible work environment. The age-old American problem of "too many chiefs, not enough Indians" and "too many bosses, not enough leaders" applies to the Ceradyne Defense division. There are people here who after being loyal employees for 10 or 20 years or more are fed up and would just rather work at Wal-Mart at this point.
