I have been working at Chapters Health System full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Helping our patients and families; caring clinical staff

    Cons

Senior Staff and President are not good; too high case loads; electronic documentation is not up to standards- the clinical trainers do not even do clinical hospice work; wrong people in the wrong jobs; low pay; staff morale is horrible

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The Senior Staff and most importantly the President need to be investigated. Spending money to add a private bathroom for the President while cutting staff and supplies to hospice programs should not be tolerated. Little training and support to staff. Cuts to the staff are leaving patients to die without proper pain meds. Staff morale is horrible and no one seems to care which is impacting patient care. Also, I have not seen the presence of our President or Senior Staff at our hospice facility for over four years. Employees couldn't even recognize our supposed leadership.

Lots of great people work at this company. Seems that work-life balance is met in most departments and this organization has strong company values.

    Cons

Chapters is a non-profit that has adopted all the failings of for-profit companies

    Pros

Individual workers are great. Many that have been there a long time have an almost family-like relationship. They care about one another and are very friendly.

    Cons

The management is confused and do not support new employees. Chapters sees itself as a non-profit organization with the savvy of for profit organizations and hires new administrative people from private industry. Unfortunately, they have a very high turnover rate for new employees. The centralized data warehouse appears to have been patched together and the result is a data source that is often inaccurate and questioned by management. When the reports are useful and accurate it is due to an enormous input of manpower and QA that should not be necessary for a CDW this far along. Many mistakes were made in the original architecture of the system and as a result the staff creates work-arounds instead of doing the more labor intensive work of rebuilding the data structure.

Long-term employees are safe but new employees are seen and treated as expendable and thus the high turnover rate of new employees. This is at every level of hire. New senior managers are as expendable as new custodians. Unfortunate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have the correct idea, adopting a "for profit" mentality to make your organization more successful, unfortunately you've adopted all the less attractive and least positive aspects of "for profits"-particularly as it related to HR. All new employees need to be better supported as they and the organization transition to the new normal.

Also, you will expend more time and resources trying to "fix" a broken data warehouse than you will were you to scrap the design you have and start over; this time invest the expertise (use your vendor) and up front labor necessary to build a solid BI foundation. Make all data issues transparent and attack the systematic root cause.
