I have been working at Charles River Development full-time for less than a year

    Pros

This company has the smartest people with whom I have ever worked. Everyone is focused on the task at hand. As a Recruiter, I get great cooperation form the hiring managers and the interview teams. We hire only the best and brightest and that is a real recruiting challenge but that's what makes the company so successful!

I have a great Manager who effectively directs the Recruiters and provides constant guidance, assistance, and leadership. Having been with CRD for over 10 years, he offers great advice with any issues relating to candidates or the hiring process.

    Cons

I worked at Charles River Development full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

None & I absolutely mean it. Any pros mentioned about this firm are posted by HR or the recruitment team to suppress any real reviews about this firm.

    Cons

    Tons :
    1) 9 hour weekdays, if you step outside your cubicle, then you are expected to compensate for that time. Managers keep track of when you come in, how many coffee breaks you had, how long you ate lunches and when you left from office.
    2) Managers allowed to come to office once or twice a week, for the remaining time they are allowed to work from home. But for other employees there is absolutely no flexibility.
    3) No mentoring for new individuals, people are just thrown on client sites with out sufficient support. Despite of all the product bugs and no support from the development managers, It's your job to make it work. If you do make it work then you just did your job, there is no recognition or award. If you failed then you just became a scape goat, you need to find a new job soon.
    4) Total compensation is poor, base salary is 7-8% above the market rate. But if you account for 9 hour weekdays (11.11% more work ) then you are actually at loss.
    5) Bonuses are only for professional services employees, development teams don't have bonuses hence the no-support attitude. And what ever bonuses they do give, don't even match market standards.
    6) Max bonus for IC/IM/Sr. IM is 6/8/10% of base. Bonus calculation is totally skewed, they have a 40%-60% breakup. 40% is for utilization & 60% discretionary, totally depends on your manager. Guess what you don't control your utilization & neither are there any metrics to define the other 60%.
    7) Annual review is used by managers and directors to express their insecurity, fear & personal grudges. They give you a poor rating and/or they may ask you to report to your peer so that you resign yourself.
    8) There is no career path. Do your job, take your salary and go home. That's the kind of attitude management has.

Respect your employees rather than treating them as disposable entities.

I have been working at Charles River Development full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Charles River hires very smart people. Co-workers are some of the best I've worked with. Large-scale application development, so this offers a great opportunity to see how to design, extend, and manage a complex code base. Development is in Java and C#, against multiple databases, and is non-trivial -- so good for anyone who has an interest in data structures, algorithms, threading, and performance. Also good for people who have experience in one language domain but want to build up their experience in another.
Good growth potential, and company pays well. Company has a reputation around hours, but in practice schedules are flexible, most developers and management have families, and respect work-life balances -- geenral approach is to work smarter, not harder. Also, this isn't a company where you are on a pager or working weekends on production issues.

Company is big enough that they can hire to grow and focus on issues, but small enough that they can get things done and don't have significant politics issues.

    Cons

Culture can be a bit dry, and the work-life balance mentioned above is still evolving, but this is generally more of a communication issue than a real issue. Best for people with solid programming / data structure experience and/or financial experience.

I have been working at Charles River Development full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I've been working at CRD for four years and enjoy the challenging work and the pay is good. They tend to hire very talented people, so the people on the team are all very competent developers. I really enjoy the people that I work with. I'm also given a lot of freedom in design and implementation of software features.

    Cons

As you would expect, the work environment is the standard cubicle. Even though the offices/cubes were redone recently, more could be done to make the environment look like less like a financial company and more like a Google/Apple/etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have more company sponsored events for employees.

    Pros

If your are a product manager or an engineer, there are great opportunities here. The philosophy of keeping the R&D team centrally located and self funding of the R&D budget, provides the right people with a tremendous level of responsibility. The CEO is committed to continued product investment. All this is backed by a solid balance sheets and an enviable client list.

    Cons

Could do better with talent development and culture, but things are moving in the right direction and efforts are being made.

    Pros

The product is very complex and you are challenged on a daily basis. It's hard work but fun.
For the most part, you can set your own work schedule ==> Good Work - Life balance.

    Cons

Development departments work in silos. There is no VP providing leadership across all departments

    No opinion of CEO
