I have been working at Charles River Laboratories full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Very team-oriented approach to the laboratory work, where you can get help when you need it. You then, are expected to offer your services. Teaches you time management.

    Cons

If you are a senior member of the company, with a good salary, be aware you eventually will be targeted for being laid off. The company somehow determines the revenue each site should bring in each quarter. This number is routinely unattainable, and when it is inevitably not reached, high paid employees will be eliminated. The remaining staff then has to absorb the extra work, thus lowering morale ever more. An endless cycle. Management in MA are aware of this problem, but simply put, don't care.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Whatever algorithm is used to determine the numbers.....stop using it. Be concerned that the quality of life for your employees is below sub-par.

I have been working at Charles River Laboratories

    Pros

Small, friendly lab, great co-workers, flexible hours (reason for 2 stars)

    Cons

things often reach a 'crisis mode' where our managers get pummeled by upper mgmt; trickle-down effect. data management: methods are sloppy, technology is atrocious and primitive, time-waster. clients seem to be promised more than employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper mgmt - recognize the value of your "low-level" employees. CARE about your employees. none of us at this lab feel you do.

I have been working at Charles River Laboratories full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great Benefits. As many other emplorers cut employee benefits, Charels River continued to provide yearly bonuses and 401k contributions to even the lowest paid employees. The health benefits are excellent and they provide very good vacation benefits.

    Cons

Going through work force reduction due to dynamic changes in the industry. They used to have a very family oriented feel to their corporate culture but have recently lost that as they moved towards a more "strictly" corporate culture. As with any corporation, workforce reduction improves the bottom line when an industry suffers from a shrinking industry. You defintely get the feeling you're just a number now but that is just the nature of business today.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen Better and react to the employee surveys.

I worked at Charles River Laboratories full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

-Hire students right out of college and give them the opportunity to see many sites and get a feel for what area they may prefer to settle in.
-Many of the coworkers were nice and willing to help one another (depending on the site you were at)
-Flexible with giving time off when needed
    -Good place to build experience

    Cons

    Where should I start...
-Lack of communication between upper management with employees
    -Not much opportunity for advancement
    -High turnover rates
    -Very physically demanding
-Some supervisors seem to just overlook when employees do things wrong instead correcting them and showing the proper way to do things.
-Some supervisors seem to care more about themselves and their lives then their own employees.
-Employees are not really encouraged to go above and beyond what is required because they never seem to be rewarded with even a simple thank you.
-Management never seems to take the ideas of the employees even though the employees are the ones on the floor actually performing the given tasks

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Break out of the office and actually meet some of the employees. See what they are doing for the company and consider ideas they may have.

I worked at Charles River Laboratories full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Culture (at US and UK sites), benefits, core values.

    Cons

No room for advancement unless you are friends with management, team morale extremely low at most sites, lots of political infighting, very poor salaries at Canadian site.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop using fear tactics to keep people working at 110% with low morale and burnout. It is well documented that encouragement and advancement opportunities make people want to give their best at work.
Stop rewarding years of loyal, exceptional service to the company with employee layoffs. The company is known for them and has a relatively negative public image.
