I worked at Charles River Laboratories

    Pros

Need Experience? - Come join and then get out. Like everybody does.

    Cons

The dept excluding clinic are hell to work in. The Manager doesn't even allow you to play radio in these departments except Finance. The dept I worked at the Manager wasn't even able to make decisions on its own - the nego group was making it for him. And well it's a secret to anyone working there anyway.

Outstanding work is never appreciated and God forbid if you leave 5 second early - the check your card swipe and you would be called in the office for those 5 seconds and if you worked 2 hours extras?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is known to micro manage the employees. The stories were that every little email would get picked up by IT dept. The middle management doesn't know how to deal with employees - very bad treatment.

    Pros

Good work hours, decent benefits, knowledgeable coworkers. The people you work with are dedicated and strive to do good work.

    Cons

Management doesnt value employees, they constantly make their numbers by cutting the benefits of employees but raises are small even if you are a top performer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get back to focusing on the employees and they will continue to provide high quality. Constanting retraining new employees leads to mistakes.

I worked at Charles River Laboratories

    Pros

Good training and experience. If you're a college grad looking to get job experience, CRL will take you. Just don't stay too long. The necropsy and archive departments aren't terrible places to work.

    Cons

Where to start... The well fare of the techs and quality data are not a priority. Working nights and weekends and major holidays are expected (and through lunches). In-Life technicians have a ridiculous amount of responsibility and can lose their job over practically nothing. All in all, the office is Disorganized and very disfunctional in almost every aspect. There's inadequate staff for the research projects, archaic data gathering systems, disgruntled/overworked employees at every turn.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out while you still have your sanity. Or start improving communication between techs, study directors, supervisors and clients. Push for more employees or turn down clients until you nail down the staffing issues. Most importantly, work on organization; completing assignments and studies "by the skin of your teath" is no way to do science and should not be a norm.

    Pros

You can get a variety of experience in a relatively short time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think more about the employees than the stock market.

If you are good with high school mind games, this could be your first job out of college (if you went to college)

    Pros

If you can survive the insecure political backstabbing and high school games, the are a few departments worth being in for more than 1-2 years.

    Cons

You could be in a job that requires a degree with others who did not go to college doing the same job, making you think your degree was a waste of money. Favoritism runs rampant like a rash. If you are not a favorite, superiors will set you up for failure until you are fired. Management is married to HR here, so if you have an issue you are limited to how much will be done about it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to make a rule about inter-office dating (ban it).

I worked at Charles River Laboratories full-time

    Pros

A good place to learn some of the basics of nonclinical testing. A good place to start building career network if you are just out of college.

    Cons

If you stick with one position or one group for a long time, your knowledge will quickly plateau. Career development is very limited. If you want to progress in your career, you need to actively transfer within the company yourself (or leave).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In my experience, fear-based management tactics were used. This is not a sustainable model. Also, if you want employees to stick around for a long time, open up sites in rural areas.

Current Employee - Quality Assurance Auditor II in Reno, NV

I have been working at Charles River Laboratories full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

It is nice working in a professional environment that still maintains a casual, laid-back culture. Employees are dedicated to the mission of the company, which is aiding and accelerating drug development through preclinical research. I enjoy having a great deal of autonomy in my position... NEVER micromanaged.

    Cons

Workloads within some departments were overwhelming at times. In general, salaries are not commensurate with other CROs and certainly not with large pharm/biotech companies. CRL- Nevada benefits from being the only gig in town for those with a biology/life sciences background. A lot of employees stay because the area is rich in quality outdoor activity, not to mention lower cost of living than the West Coast science hubs. That said, CRL seems to even be falling behind on salaries compared to other companies in the small Reno market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Suggest periodic research/adjustment to ensure that salaries ranges are current and competitive.
