    I worked at Chemtura full-time

    Pros

Was a great team culture and very happy to work with my teammates even despite going through bankruptcy in 2009-10. Benefits and are hard to beat and also competitive salaries. The West Lafayette site is a great college town, but it is being de-emphasized in 2014 versus headquarters and plant sites. Generally good market positions in its 2 remaining major businesses, but innovation/vitality is lower than it should be.

    Cons

Sticking with top-down goals despite market realities caused serious issues with business performance. Significant restructuring in 4Q every year 2012-2014 as major pieces of the company sold off. Now acknowledge that the company will not exist in its current state - will be sold off or acquired; however acquired employees have generally been happier with their new firm. Constant downsizing continually means doing the same or more with less, and few career development opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make the major portfolio changes as quickly as possible - communicate them and get them over. Prolonging the pain and cutting too many people in the short term will damage the long term potential of the businesses and thus their value to an acquirer. Difficult to do in a shrinking company, but having personal development opportunities and a clear vision would retain and attract the right people.

    Pros

Good as it can be. We got excellent life insurance benefits. Very small work force on its way out the door.

    Cons

Bad as it can be. Office management lacks credibility. Safety is key, but the management finds no interest in it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Understaffed and Overworked

I have been working at Chemtura full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Greater ability for additional responsibilities due to shrinking workforce.

    Cons

Lack of communication within businesses and between businesses and departments. Impossible deadlines. No compensation for overtime work. Difficult for internal and external customers to do business with Chemtura. Entire dedicated IT workforce replaced by unskilled and untrained IT non-professionals who cannot carry out the most basic of IT functions thus causing constant disruption in work flow and productivity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate with staff. Be honest and open about upcoming changes. Provide compensation for staff who have taken on greater responsibilities due to loss of positions. Replace IT staff with properly trained IT professionals.

I have been working at Chemtura full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Salary & benefits are competitive. This is a relatively flat organization, without a lot of layers. It is also very lean (not sure if that is a con, for the work loads it creates).

    Cons

Having to live with the uncertainty of downsizing every September (2012, 2013, 2014). Many have old school managerial styles, unwilling to listen to and execute new ideas. Pretty low morale.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen. Encourage feedback (not at the top, require lower level managers to solicit feedback. You are getting it too lean to be able to compete and survive for very long.

I worked at Chemtura full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Average on all counts, salary was average, not too innovative, limited chances at promotion as the organization was structurally flat.

    Cons

Reorganization every year without a plan to cover the work. It was cut the people and then realize what work was left to do and then tell the people left that they needed work harder and longer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Plan a little more before you reorganize. If cost reduction is the goal, then rather than cut heads ask the people to figure out how to improve efficiencies to reduce costs. At lot of knowledge is constantly leaving the door and the people with strong skills are looking at better managed companies for their next job.

I have been working at Chemtura full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Very good benefits, especially the 401k program. Administrative salaries are competitive.

    Cons

This place is conatantly laying off and asking those left beind to assimilate more duties into an already full work week while not incurring overtime. Management changes its model far too much. There is always a "re-organization" going on. Due to all the layoffs, there is no opportunity for advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Run this company correctly.
