Pros
There is unlimited opportunity potential for career growth and benefits are among the best in the oil and gas industry

The training program is not the best I hae encountered but it is typical of the oil and gas industry and overall would be considered acceptable.
Pros
Compensation is fantastic, people are superb, travel opportunities are available, lots of room for growth within the organization, many opportunities for learning. There was a free gym at our building. Petrotechs (Engineers, Geologists & Geophysicists) have it the best.
Cons
Personal experience with my supervisor were not good. She lacked the finesse to deal with people and therefore dragged down the morale of our group. She was smart, but not people savvy.
Deadlines are strict and many hours were spent working in the evening and weekends in the summer of all times.
Perfection is expected with little room for error. I found the executive management gave a lot of lip service when it came to OH&S without walking the talk.
Found the organization to be very very conservative, little freedom to express yourself as an individual. To prove my point about conservative workplace, during the Obama and McCain race, Chevron backed McCain on his bid. Enough said.
Advice to Senior Management
Management in the Canada Business Unit should take more risks when planning future projects. Without calculated risks, there is no reward. This is the reason why Chevron is all but unknown in the Canadian oil industry and continues to be a minor joint venture partner in a handful of projects.
It seems as though every five years the direction of the business unit changes. No REAL long term planning except for the low risk projects already in the construction phase. My advice, push back against CNAEP and Corporate sometimes is necessary to get your way and to restore Chevron as a respected brand in Canada.

Restrictive and sometimes arbitrary rules around career progression and the amount of time an employee needs to spend within a "pay scale grade" (PSG) before getting a promotion to the next PSG means that if you educate yourself, apply yourself, take on challenges and progress your level of responsibility quickly (e.g. you are a 'high performer' outperforming other employees), your pay level will never catch up with your career progression. This is not just about the amount you are paid, but the fact that you are less likely to be considered for other roles within the company with higher PSGs, because it appears that you are not qualified, due to your current PSG being comparatively low. Even if you do manage to get a role that is a much higher PSG (say 3 or 4 levels above your current PSG), a role that actually reflects your level of responsibility, perhaps because your future manager knows your capability, you will not ever progress more than 1 PSG every few years. Ensure if you are signing up with Chevron that you inquire as to what PSG your role is, and then try to push it northward. Even if your starting pay level stays similar to the initial offer, you want that higher PSG if you can possibly get it.
Advice to Senior Management
If you don't change the rules or allow for exceptions in your current PSG progression policy, you are going to lose some of your "hipots" that could be paid double for what they are doing at another company.

My department was VERY much a clique of individuals that never accepted me as a part of their department. I saw nothing but unprofessionalness my entire 3 years at Chevron. Individuals would whisper among themselves, my manager would consistently tell me I was terrible, people in my group really took joy from telling my manager bad things about me. I would go to my manager and tell her inappropriate behavior that was taking place and she would not respond to it. I truly saw individuals in my department run my boss. She was not a manager and did not lead. Seriously everyone at Chevron takes their job WAY too serious, people are ‘gunning’ for people, and need to take a good look at their behaviors.
Advice to Senior Management
Value your employees, respect them in how you give feedback, and most of all you are not better than anyone else because you are in a management role at Chevron!

Compensation and promotions are all right initially, but get complicated after a vfew years; lack of transparency.
Pros
Very good work-life balance. Great people with diverse background. Workplace politics is minimal. Horizon program is very good for fresh graduates. Good opportunity if you want to relocate ouside US

Too many processes can kill the opportunity to do real technical works. Most of the managers are not very efficient. Some business unit can be very stingy. Getting promotion is really difficult once you reach pay-grade 23.

Please try to reduce unncessary processes. Keep the good work-life balance as it is. Try to create leaders not just managers.
Pros
focus on safety. flexible work hour, charitable matching, employee stock purchase plan,lots of volunteer opportunities, gym, the work is very routine, and everything is about procedure. If you just want to bring a check home and not so ambitious, this is the place to go.

lots of meeting, annual performance review. the company is constantly outsourse the jobs so that the job is not so secure as before. hard to get promoted.
