I have been working at Chevron

    Pros

Good Work life balance. Safety comes first culture.

    Cons

Many politics in workplace that play big roles in decision making. Not very clear vision that inspires all level of employee. Authorative management style that discourages creativity

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Define a unique strategy and try to desolve it in all of our work so that everybody clearly understands it. Stop saying that we have similar strategy with other major and the difference is in the execution. That's not strategy.

    I worked at Chevron

    Pros

Large corporation with competitive compensation. Shared IT support on global platform, seamless to all. Safety is always considered first and foremost.

    Cons

Ineffective performance evaluations; timliness was not aligned with activities. Upstream won't consider Downstream personnel and Downstream won't look at Chemical's personnel. They don't lidsten enough to their own managers and have to hire consultants to tell them the answer they already know. Too much consensus building required for decisions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cross fertilize your groups and ensure that opportunities are clearly available.

I have been working at Chevron

    Pros

    Good opportunities for global exposure
    Salaries are market competitive
Good access to knowledge, standards, and other reference material

    Cons

Employee performance evaluation is Forced Ranking, Chevron's version of the system "accomodates" those close to management preference with a good performance facade. Benchmark used is not clear, camouflaged by a subjective comparison "among peers". The system is a deterrent of teamwork and does not promote innovation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Even though 360-feedbacks are in place, performance rewards (salary, career development) are too attached to Forced Ranking, better measures should be put in place to address pitfalls of the system.

    I worked at Chevron

    Pros

Flexible scheduling and easy going work atmosphere. Whenever I needed time off I met little resistance from my manager and I was able to switch shifts regularly.

    Cons

It was an entry level position with little to no opportunity for advancement or pay raises. It helped me go to school but they took advantage of the fact I couldn't ask for more pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I don't really have any advice to management.

Current Employee - Electrical Engineer in El Segundo, CA

I have been working at Chevron

    Pros

An opportunity to meet lots of good people, and develop excellent people skills by working with all types of diverse people.

    Cons

There are lots of job opportunites, but mostly for mechanical and process engineers. People are always reacting to problems, versus being proactive. Very difficult to be focused on 1-2 priorities.
There are way too many priorities (I can only speak for El Segundo refinery).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to empower employees, and need to focus only on top 3-4 priorities versus too many priorities. Have way too many meetings.
