Best pension of major oil companies
    8% matching on 2% contribution for 401K
    75% Tuition Reimbursement

    Cons

    Can get pretty bureaucratic
    Slow to get work approved
    Very risk adverse

    Advice to Management

    Pros

Excellent work-life balance; 9/80 Fridays are respected and people are family oriented. Huge company with the possibility to change careers every 2 years and experience totally different job functions.

    Cons

The company is old and big, read: slow. Tons of bureaucracy and resistant to change.

    Advice to Management

Hire the best, then retain them by keeping up with the competition in terms of salary. This is the business model but is not functioning correctly.

    Pros

Great team of operators. High emphasis on safety and employee development, a great full spectrum oil company to work for.

    Cons

I worked in Research and Development, so the budget was constantly changing. One year they could hire technicians, then they might go five years without being able to hire.

    Advice to Management

keep a fixed budget for the departments that traditionally have been very up and down, money spent on research is never a bad bet.

    Pros

Good benefits, competitive salary, good training. I met many knowledgeable and professional people. I enjoyed the camaraderie, collaborative environment and multicultural experience.

    Cons

Company continually talks about work/life balance, but it does not exist; it's all work, all the time. Management expects emails to be read and solutions provided, regardless of day of the week, time of the day or on vacation.

Management says they do not want you to come to work if your ill, but will give you a negative review if you take too many sick days. Even if your sick days are related to a serious illness or incurable disease.

    Advice to Management

When you communicate with employees, have something real and tangible to say. Rhetoric and repetition is hollow and eventually gives the individual the feeling of being talked-down-to. Your employees tune-out and parrot your buzz phrases, to avoid management scrutiny.

    Pros

LIfe/work balance and benefits are fantastic, lots of great managers that use corporate feedback processes, has old-American values (takes perspective of one-company career for life)

    Cons

Slow pace, very process heavy, average older workforce, stuffy culture

    Advice to Management

Need to find more dynamic opportunities for development of younger staff working their way up

High pay and great benefits, and promising future, as long as you're willing to move to Houston.

    Pros

#1 pro = High, competitive pay. Great benefits. 401k match. Flexible hours. Can work from home occasionally if the nature of your job allows it. 9/80 work schedule (every other Friday off). Performance management and reviews are, for the most part, fair and generous as long as you're a top performer. Challenging work.

    Cons

Even with a flexible schedule, expect to work lots of overtime/weekends, especially during busy project seasons. Lots of favoritism happens in every work group. Random layoffs/reorgs, even more so now that most jobs/functions are moving to Houston, Texas. Must be willing to relocate to get the best job opportunities/promotions.
