I have been working at Child Trends full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

A clear, strong mission to improve children's lives through rigorous research.
    Strong ethics and values.
    Motivated, productive colleagues.
Inter-departmental collaboration, and opportunities to work on a variety of different projects and use a diverse skill set.
Variety day-to-day, and in work content.

    Cons

As Child Trends expands and grows satellite sites, tough decisions have to be made about how to allocate and use limited resources to meet increasing needs for space, equipment, staff, etc. Close attention must be paid --and a concerted effort made-- to ensure that satellite offices and employees working remotely feel included, that their requests are being heard, and that their needs are being considered.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue strengthening the process for supporting satellite offices and employees to ensure that their voices are being heard and considered, and that their needs are being met in a timely, adequate fashion.

I have been working at Child Trends full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Mission focused
    Care about quality products
Work with very smart colleagues who share their knowledge to improve your development
A flexible family friendly environment and schedule
High integrity in the people and the work
You want to be friends with your colleagues even outside of work

    Cons

A very organized person can succeed here because it requires skillful time management to get your work done and not feel overwhelmed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward people in creative ways for their accomplishments. A raise and a promotion are always nice, but sometimes public acknowledgement or other bonuses would also work well.

Opportunities to work across programs areas and learn more from a "whole child" perspective

    Cons

At times can be hard to maintain work/life balance
Some "growing pains" as Child Trends gets larger, but senior management works very to listen across the organization to the changing organizational needs and address them

I have been working at Child Trends full-time

    Pros

Truly collaborative work environment; Supportive colleagues range from friendly peers to senior level mentors; Commitment to high-quality research that can be immediately applied in and disseminated to the real world

    Cons

Variation in experiences of staff in different program areas; in other words, depending on a person's program area, he or she might have a very different experience in their workload, expectations from managers, etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up your practice of soliciting feedback from all levels of staff -- everyone in this organization has valuable lessons and/or suggestions to share.

I worked at Child Trends full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Meaningful, mission-driven research to improve kids lives.
Friendly and talented colleagues (no egos).
    Superior management.
Autonomy to pursue work of interest to you.
Growing at a solid rate over time (even during recession), with good management of growth.
Very strong benefits, particularly retirement benefit.

    Cons

Particularly for smaller projects, timelines & budgets can be tight (at times, too tight for comfort).
Almost all research positions are funded by soft money (i.e., government and foundation grants), although this is typical for similar research organizations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the good work!

I have been working at Child Trends full-time

    Pros

My coworkers at Child Trends are great to work with, and learn from. They care about my professional interests and development. As a junior staff member, I have a lot of say about the projects and tasks I work on.

    Cons

In my experience, junior staff tend to stay in the office most of the time rather than interacting with clients and other professionals in the field.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rewards (bonuses, promotions, or otherwise) for exceptional work could boost morale when day-to-day work can sometimes become mundane.

    Cons

Size, reporting structure in admin side is muddy, lack of standardized system, robustness of training is lacking

    Pros

Friendly people at the workplace and they have many good projects that you can work on as an entry-level. If you want to go to grads school, you may get good recommendations from the workplace.

    Cons

The equipments that are provided to employees are okay. Would be better if there are more events for bonding the whole community together will be better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More corporate culture building events are strongly needed. Hope the equipments such as computers and softwares in the office can be upgraded if possible.
