    Administrative Assistant

    Administrative Assistant III (Current Employee)
    Boston, MA

ProsGood experience, doctors are great. Other administrative staff works well as a team. Tuition reimbursement is a plus.Hours are flexible.

ConsAdministrative management is bordering on imcompetent. Pay is low compared to hospitals in the area. Not much opportunity for advancement.

Abysmal environment for Marketing Department employees

    Marketing (Former Employee)
    Boston, MA

    ProsGreat institutional mission
    Talented and caring medical staff

ConsSenior departmental leadership that is as mean-spirited as it is ineffectual. Complete lack of strategy or long-term planning. Expectations that seem to shift by the minute with no tangible results, even years later. Sky's the limit attitude on spending when it comes to consultants and pet projects, while claiming there is no money in the budget to give hard-working staff full-time status with benefits. Constant foul-mouthed, nasty snipes from senior departmental leadership, including about other leaders in the hospital. Verbal and emotional abuse of a group of staff who really care about the hospital but are exploited and belittled at every turn. And perhaps worst of all, top hospital brass that either doesn't know or doesn't care how bad things are...despite an almost 100% staff turnover since present departmental leadership took over.

Advice to Senior ManagementIMO there is no advice that would improve things with the current departmental management. My advice to hospital leadership: take a real look under the surface. Talk to employees in private (not just through HR). And if you really want to preserve the institutional knowledge and commitment to the mission of this hospital that still exists in the department, replace senior leadership. Stat.

Excellent research environment but low compensation

    Research Fellow (Current Employee)
    Boston, MA

Pros1) You get to work with some of the most talented scientists in the country
    2) Being affiliated with Harvard Medical School allows for good research exposure (i.e., ability to work on high impact projects, ability to ascertain funding and materials, and access to career fairs from employers only looking to hire from the HMS community)
    3) Good opportunities available to transition to alternative careers. E.g., access to consulting and scientific writing clubs.

Cons1) Salary should be reflective of the fact that we are living in Boston and being affiliated with Harvard.
    2) Hypercompetitve research environment (this could be a good or bad thing depending on your viewpoint).
    3) Colleagues within the same institution may steal your projects/ideas .... keep a TIGHT lip.

Advice to Senior ManagementThink about how much your research fellows contribute to your success. Treat us better. Reward us accordingly and set an example for other top-notch academic institutions.

Great Organization, HR & Recruitment team is a joke!!!

Former Human Resources Employee (Not Disgruntled) (Former Employee)
    Boston, MA

ProsReputation. The work they do. Pay is.....well, fair for most....there are quite a few of overpaid leaders in their HR organization.

ConsOld school, process and gatekeeper focused HR group. Very backwards thinking and very punitive in their style. Not a partnering department at all.

Advice to Senior ManagementLook at shaking things up in your HR department. Remember the definition of insanity....allowing the same behaviors over and over and expecting a different outcome. Turn that department over....what a waste of resources!
