I have been working at Children's Hospital Boston full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Generally an up-beat place to work with a very diverse and accepting environment. Working to help children and their families is very rewarding.

    Cons

HR is horrible. Advancement can be elusive and with no explanation from management. People who want to advance their careers should be allowed to work hard and do just that. If its not happening they should be given a reason so they can improve themselves. Also, very cheap company. Annual salary increases have been locked at a sad 2 percent for all staff which doesn't even cover the increase in the cost of living. Oh an no bonuses allowed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If the hospital is doing so well and gives the best care then the staff salaries should reflect that.

I have been working at Children's Hospital Boston as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

The leadership encourages individuality, independence and trust.

    Cons

The building could use a major renovation. Computer hardware, cubicles, interior design feels like an elementary school from the 1980's, extremely outdated. Lacking sunlight from outside induces subtle feelings of claustrophobia.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In addition to the 'welcome new staff member' email, consider showing the new hire around the office space and formally introducing them to staff outside of the team that would serve as a valuable resource to them. Making this effort should demonstrate the importance of relationship building and help the new hire feel comfortable in the new environment.

I have been working at Children's Hospital Boston full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great facilities and resources
    Large research community
    Excellent health benefits

    Cons

    No training
    No room for advancement
    No job placement assistance
Very quick to criticize and slow to complement
Despite the high cost of living in the Boston area Boston Children's does not pay above the NIH guidelines

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are many opportunities at the hospital ranging from clinical research, bioinformatics, technology/innovation development to lab safety. It would be helpful if Boston Children's provided formal opportunities to gain experience in these areas.
