    Pros

The doctors, nurses, and all other staff here are excellent and take pride in their job. Everyone really tries their best to provide the best care for kids. People are friendly and most departments are fun to work in. People believe in team work and function cohesively together. Work life balance is good as long you make it a priority. It's easy to spend too much time here and many people do. The salary is somewhat competitive but cannot match the big name competitors for high achievers, therefore aggressive employees tend to leave for greener pastures after several years. Benefits were awesome 7-9 years ago but have been steadily reduced the last 5 years to match the economy.

    Cons

Staff cafeteria discount has been reduced from 20% to 15% and then to 10%, while prices have increased 20% over the years. Cost of food has gotten pretty expensive. Salaries for non union employees were frozen for several years. There is not much motivation to work hard for people at the top of their pay scale as salary increases are nominal but you need to be exceptional at your job. Therefore top performers tend to look elsewhere once they top out. This is no way to reward long term employees and top talent. It's very hard to get promoted as there is not much job growth. Most managers do not seem interested in caring about your career goals. If you do not care about money and advancement, it would be fine to work here long term...and many people do. Many departments operate on a skeleton crew so many people are over worked. There are no performance bonuses or any other incentives for talented staff to strive for. Many people are making the same amount of money as they were making 10 years ago as a result management reducing the benefits so most people are not ahead of inflation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employees should get more perks such as larger cafeteria discounts or free soda. Reducing healthcare benefits and freezing salaries while asking staff to donate to the hospital leaves many staff bitter towards management. If management offered more perks such as a free lunch every month or something else it might encourage more staff to donate. Listen to staff more regarding the need for more staffing levels. Productivity reports do not always tell the whole picture as caring for children is very unpredictable.

    Pros

occasional social events such as BBQ, Ice-cream, and television shows screening (when I was there, they played Sherlock Holmes); research seminars where the company researchers present findings; facilities including a beautiful patio, ping pong table; people are nice

    Cons

work can get feel repetitive as a volunteer researcher after a year doing the same procedures and techniques if you do not keep up with the research literature; not enough discussion and enthusiasm between peers over research progress.

    Pros

Helping children, being useful to society.

    Cons

The management lacks flexibility, the pay rate is low compared to other hospitals in the area

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To avoid the exodus of qualified employees is good to recognize them, pay them what they are worth, be flexible with them.

    Pros

Good working relations with a handful of inpatient pharmacy staff (a couple of pharmacists and technicians), the medical residents, patients, janitorial staff and some nurses.

    Cons

The inpatient pharmacy department is a high-school playground with many bullies/queen-bees. The management is well aware of the work place bullying going on but refuses to do anything. Quite simply put the management panders to the bullies. There are employees in the inpatient pharmacy that are targeted, harassed, bullied, and discriminated against by fellow employees and management rewards them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The inpatient pharmacy management and the human resources department (who are well aware of the atrocities going on in the inpatient pharmacy) are part of the problem. They have been given tons of advice but refuse to do anything.

Former Employee - Study Coordinator in Oakland, CA

    Pros

Great benefits (not as good recently though, I heard) and flexible working conditions. The people that work there are pretty great, mostly - friendly and have good senses of humor. Plus, you always feel like you're contributing to society and it's hard to be in a bad mood around the kids.

    Cons

If you are a non-clinical person, you are at the lowest tier of the totem pole and they will give you as much (usually really low-level) work as you will take on. Forget reaching your full potential - there's really limited opportunity for us folks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Utilize all of your employees to their full potential, try to be more organized and efficient.

Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in Oakland, CA

    Pros

Many people have been working 20+ years here for a reason. The pay is great, and the benefits are better than what you would see in 80% of the companies out there.

    Cons

Communication about future plans could be better. Most information regarding major changes seems to trickle from employee to employee based on what their managers told them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We know you are committed to the cause, but it would be helpful if employees had more direction on the really important issues that the hospital is facing.
