I worked at Chitika full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Excellent work-life balance with a fun atmosphere.
Nice employees who contribute to a sense of camaraderie.
Exciting industry with great potential for growth.

    Cons

There is a sever lack of structure, while helping with the laid-back atmosphere, actually deters operational efficiency and decision making processes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a bit more structure so employees know who their direct managers are, and create a system for questions, processes, etc.

I worked at Chitika as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

    Free food and dry cleaning.....
    Happy Hour Friday

    Cons

This place is a zoo. Half of the "engineers" does not even have a bachelor's in related disciple. They will hire anyone that can fit into the "culture" of all play, no work. The previous poster is right, filled with Video Game nerds that doesn't shower and stays late so they can mooch off the free frozen dinners as well.
Serious lack of professionalism due to management being young and inexperienced. Really have to be involved with the "higher ups" to survive here.
Also, they like to hire an "Office" person to run around and pick up after employees, clean messes, etc. That just shows how the company's ethical culture is.

Huge opportunities, tough leaders, mid-level managers are coaches but powerless pawns of CEO/CTO and I learned a lot

I have been working at Chitika full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Lots of growth, exciting industry, awesome work culture, managers really back you, not cut-throat VC backed environment

    Cons

Not enough engineers and engineering core is very dissatisfied. Don't build any long-lasting services/products. Too short-term/experimental is the output. Expectation of work comes first similar to I-banking - weekends and late nights very often.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

PAY AT SENSIBLE LEVEL TO ATTRACT GOOD ENGG TALENT!!! Fewer engineers than employees in most other departments. All pressure is usually just funneled to engg deparment. Engg manager seems unable to say no or get priorities from CEO/CTO for anything more than a week!

    Pros

Anything that you think is important to the company has a good chance of getting heard out and often acted upon. Ideas are encouraged. Every day is different.

    Cons

The company is experiencing growing pains. The engineering group has not grown proportionally to fit the needs of the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For any internet technology company, the engineering group is critical. Their happiness will lead to all sorts of improved outcomes. They won't be happy under constant pressure and lack of adequate staffing.

I have been working at Chitika full-time

    Pros

Relaxed atmosphere most of the time. Plenty of opportunity for advancement if you're willing to take it. You are very much responsible for directing your work, which is good for some, not for others.

    Cons

Communication overall is very poor. As a result, a lot of effort is duplicated, and requirements are not always clear. Goals are often absurdly lofty.

I have been working at Chitika

    Pros

The entry level employees are very smart and motivated, the atmosphere is very relaxed (maybe too much), free dry cleaning, free lunch snacks etc......

    Cons

Management can't get out of its own way. If you are used to being able to make any decisions or being treated like an adult this is not the place for you! There are often conflicting opinions and you are stuck in the middle. Things change quickly and without warning. May even be "spoken to" for not showing enough enthusiasm or sitting at the lunch tables designed for 3rd graders. The good news; if you like spending a lot of your time playing ping pong you will love it here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give people more power to make decisions, that is why you hired them.

    Pros

    Perks as everyone has mentioned.

    Cons

    - Pay below market
    - Structure is so spammy.. sorry, it's hard to take someone that looks like he can careless about the project seriously. And the fact that they are young and inexperienced.. just because they've been there for mroe than 3 years and buy into the culture does NOT mean you should keep promoting them.
    - The place is a mess
    - Definitely clicky and buy into favoritism
    - Workers couldn't perform the same job anywhere else for the life of them.. the culture here is so laidback to the point where there is no structure. A lot of deadweights that feels a game of pingpong is much more important than business.

I have been working at Chitika full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    1. Management takes care of you very well -- bonuses, vacation flexibility, place to play (ping pong, xbox, drinks) at work, breakfast and lunch feasts, commuting reimbursement if you live in Boston.

    2. Lots of ambition shown CEO and CTO

    3. Lots to opportunities to improve skills

    4. Very lucrative industry as its nascent and talent war is massive!

    5. Learn and work with cross functional departments ALL THE TIME

    Cons

    1. Out of 50 odd people right now, 1/3 are quite dumb

    2. Don't feel like you're making the world a better place. The digital ad industry really focused on money rather than larger goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

How can Chitika beat Google? Can Chitika everr be the best in "its" industry? This means advertising as its seen now with Google as dominant player may not always be our niche.

    I worked at Chitika

    Pros

Timepass job and easy to get good performance evaluation if you suck up to bosses.
You can play table tennis for several hours and no body minds.
If you are okay with boredom and no need to develop knowledge, job is perfect.

    Cons

Job is boring and repetitive, low growth opportunities.
Management doesnt have technical knowledge and is run by a "school dropout".
Burnouts are frequent for hard working folks as management is pressurizing people too much.
Frequent firing and layoffs are common.
No promotions and no hike in salary.
Company is doing poorly financially. All employees are demoralizing and worried about holding onto their jobs.

Former Contractor - PMO in Hyderābād (India)

I worked at Chitika as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Flexi timings, ping pong, food in the office.

    Cons

This company aspires to be a "Google" and in a way works like the Indian Government offices. There are no "Leaders" here, just a college drop-out employee who is a head poncho of sorts. The management has no clue what's going on. Chaotic is the word you use for the India office. Kiddish, unprofessional with absolutely no vision. Zero job security and no respect for its employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Guess what? Food, ping pong table & a PS3 does not make Chitika a "Google." That shallow thinking is the downfall of the company.
Get your act right while you still can!
