I worked at Choate Hall & Stewart full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Well respected firm, with great benefits, clear organizational structure. People are hardworking, committed and alternative work schedules considered if your team can work with it, also one can work remotely if needed for the day or if something were to come up.

    Cons

Although they have a 35 hour work week for non-legal associates, depending on your area, the work can often exceed 40 hours.

    Pros

Great opportunity for undergraduate students with an interest in law to gain an insider view of what it is really like to work in a big law firm.

    Cons

A lot of the training need to done on your own. Definitely not for those who are used to spoon-feeding. But after all, if you are not a self-learner, you would't end up here either.

    Pros

The firm is a very profitable, well run organization, with very few "difficult" personalities. They have made a conscious decision to remain one office, which helps maintain a good camaraderie. Compensation is in line with comparable firms.

    Cons

The training varies depending on which department you are in. Feedback is a bit lacking. The hours can be long, and there is pressure to produce billable hours, but that comes with the territory.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more frequent feedback than just annual reviews.

    Great Intellectual Property Team

I have been working at Choate Hall & Stewart full-time

    Pros

Intellectual Property department: The department has very smart and talented people who work well as a team. Junior people get to do real and exciting work from day one. Each project / case is usually staffed by a junior person and a senior person, so it's good for the client (lower overall bill) and for the junior person (gets practical hands-on training and mentoring). There's no shortage of good work to do in the IP department. Clients love Choate and keep coming back for good reason.

Firm: Firm has a good review process (but see con) and a mentoring program that's unheard of at other law firms. Overall, although people take their work seriously, the work environment feels more casual / relaxed compared to other law firms and most people don't take themselves too seriously.

    Cons

The review process was not always transparent. The short half-page to 1 page review summaries did not seem to match the actual comments that reviewers submitted. Sometimes there would be (negative) comments in the summary that were not found anywhere in anything that the reviewers wrote.

Bonuses at least for junior people seemed to relate directly to the number of hours billed and not quality of work / review rating.

Junior people in the IP department were not valued by the firm as a whole, despite how much we brought in for the firm compared to our salaries. Compared to other law firms in Boston and New York, the commitment to the firm expected before the firm would even consider sending someone to law school was much greater.

There were some unpleasant office politics largely stemming from certain difficult persons in positions of power (who seem to have left firm by now)... but overall it seems to take management a long time to "encourage" such persons to leave.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat junior people in IP department as a valuable part of the firm

I have been working at Choate Hall & Stewart

    Pros

The single office makes Choate a collegial place to work. The partners take the time to meet and get to know the associates.

    Cons

The hours are long, as at any firm. Some of the partners can be a bit difficult to work with. The benefits package for associates is not as generous as at many other firms in Boston.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overall, I'm very happy with the firm, the communication from management, and the opportunities for growth and promotion. Revisit the benefits package and consider matching the offerings provided by other Boston firms.
