I have been working at Christmas Tree Shops part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Shift hours never changed, discount was nice, and management was easy to get along with for the most part

    Cons

Way to conservative for the environment they are. Few management were very nit picky about the smallest things that the everyday person wouldn't pay any attention to and sort of seemed like I was harassed by one of them. There was no room for growth within the company as everyone in there positions had been there for quite some time.

    CSR Call center

I have been working at Christmas Tree Shops

    Pros

Day goes by fast. Good location.

    Cons

The rules and guidelines are different from team to team so there is never any consistency. They are constantly micromanaging and making you feel like you never do anything right. There is this 5 min policy that when you have to work on something for more than 5 minutes you have to tell management, well even when you do that you will still get bigger by others asking what you are working on. So you feel rushed and have no time to work on customer follow ups.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The 5 minute off the phone let a manager know what you are working on is a horrible idea! If you saw how many customer follow ups a CSR has to do in one day, you would know it will take more than 5 minutes of being off the phone to work on! This just makes us feel rushed and more mistakes are made when you have to rush through things. I want to make sure everything is accurate but it's hard to do when I have 5 people asking me what I'm working on and feeling the pressure of having to get back on the phone. You should allow at least 30 minutes a day where a CSR can work on making sure the customers issues are taken care of!

    Pros

Good discount. Flexible schedule. I feel like I'm appreciated. But i see that many employees are not appreciated even though they are good workers. Too many people get away with alot and ther are no consequences for their actions.

    Cons

Very busy. Not enough people. Disorganization. Not enough follow up to correct problems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Christmas Tree Shops full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The salary and benefits are good.

    Cons

You earn every penny of that great pay, long hours, unreasonable expectations and tough to keep the associates motivated. Management becomes a buffer between upper managements unrealistic decisions and trying to communicate those changes to the associates. Very often the DM will come in and ask for major changes on the sales floor and shortly after the Regional will come in and change it all again. The decisions are not made by analyzing the business metrics. Often it is personal preference. The company lacks communication and they are actually proud to tell you (the regional manager) that CTS does not train. They have a "sink" or "swim" mentality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The changes will need to start from the top down. Until the "old boy's" network changes there is little hope to move the company forward.

    Former Employee - Assistant Manager
    Former Employee - Assistant Manager

I worked at Christmas Tree Shops full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Decent benefits. Health care is a PPO which is awesome. Some hard working associates. Stock for assistant managers and up then fully vests after 5 years. Good 401K

    Cons

Demeaning management. Unprofessional upper management who discuss very unprofessional topics and use foul language with associates and coworkers. A typical assistant manager experience: Upon hire you will be told there is tons of room for advancement, which is not true unless you'd like to relocate to areas where the market is expanding such as the Carolina's or Ohio. You will be asked to work enough 6 day work weeks that it will offset the two weeks worth of vacation you are paid for after your first year until your 5th year (when you receive three weeks of vacation). You will be salaried. You will be told it is a 45 hour work week. It is typically a 60 hour work week for any manager who takes their job seriously. Do not expect a lunch break. You will need to unload 53 foot trailers floor loaded with product from back to front, top to bottom, in 100+ degrees and as you are doing so (because you are inevitably severely understaffed) you will be reprimanded for not having been on the sales floor. You will clean the restrooms yourself and will be lucky if you have cleaning staff there once a week. Yes, this includes when customers smear feces everywhere. You will not have the payroll to hire an associate to do routine cleaning so THIS WILL BE YOU. If you work hard you will be told repeatedly that they see you as a manager and just need a position to open up, and when it does you will be bypassed for a "fast tracked" manager. You will be so short staffed that you will likely open and close your building (a 14-16 hour day) if an evening manager calls out. You will flip back and forth between opening and closing and will routinely be asked to close, getting home at 9-11pm depending on store and time of year, and be required to come in by 7am the next day, often times earlier. You will be asked to drive all over to "go the extra mile" for customers and you will not be reimbursed for time or gas. You can go to new store openings, store remodels, anything ever asked on a whim because you are reliable and you will not move up in the company. More likely than not, if you are an assistant, you will work harder than your store manager.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Professionalism is important, instill that message in your entire team. Recognize managers who work hard for you and promote them. You are losing and will continue to lose all of you best, hardest working people because they are intelligent enough and driven enough to find another company where they are able to meet their potential. If long term associates leave, conduct an exit interview. There's valuable feedback to be had.
