I worked at Chubb Corp full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Strong development culture offering many opportunities for learning, strength of underwriting discipline, typically supportive of work-life balance, solid ethical values, strong management support of diversity. Respected in the insurance industry. Great place to enter the insurance industry.

    Cons

Flat organization can slow progress; also pretty defined silos within the company; culture can be passive/aggressive with indirect communication. Anticipated executive leadership change creating interesting dynamics

I worked at Chubb Corp full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Before a "reorg" of the claims department, this was one of the better companies to work for if you were in the claims department. They cut loose some long-time, loyal quality employees in their move to provide Chevrolet service at Cadillac rates. The underwriting philosophy is still pretty solid, though, and it is a company that you can feel confident will still be around in 20 years.

    Cons

Upper management are bean counters without souls. They seriously do not care about the people who work for them.

Excellent at attracting talent, mediocre in retaining it.

    Pros

Pros - flexible work arrangements, autonomy, amazing coworkers, management's commitment to your development

    Cons

Work environment is not conducive to retaining a young person like myself. But the insurance industry as a whole is a "silver" one, and I'm often the youngest in the room.

The pay isn't enough. For an older employee, lesser pay may be a viable trade off to be able to work from home, have flexible hours, and etc. But for young talent like myself, those benefits wont really be applicable until 7+ years from now. So it's getting hard for me justifying to myself why I should stay at a company paying me way less than what a competitor would. Atleast give me some good and useful perks, or revamp this whole cubicle farm setup!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be proactive in adapting to the new employee demographic. Otherwise, great talent will continue to leave. This doesn't nessecarily mean higher pay. Other more applicable benefits to us such as commuter assistance, laptops, financial planning seminars, would just as easily suffice.

    Pros

Stable company, good salaries, stable company, nice people, stable company, good career opportunities, etc.

    Cons

This is the perfect company for people who want to stay at one company, not be overly challenged, stay there FORVEVER and retire. The average employee has been there 10-20 years. And it's not because Chubb is the best company in the world. It's because no one is overly challenged and employees are allowed to stay - whether they are significant contributors or not. Technology is from the 1970s. There are very few millennials. 50% of Chubb's workforce will be retiring in the next 5 years. If you aspire to Google, Yahoo, Amazon or Bloomberg, want to be innovative in a highly energetic environment, this is not your place. As an investor, I don't know how you would ever invest in a company this far behind the times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest. Invest in your people, technology and culture.

    Pros

    Pros:
    * Collegial environment, for the most part. Note that this does not imply not working hard. You'll work hard but when things go wrong, the focus will be on addressing the problem and not on the kind of public shaming other workplaces seem to revel in. Everyone makes mistakes and Chubb, for the most part, seems to get that.
    * Convenient Somerset County location. If you, like so many others, live in Middlesex/Somerset/Hunterdon/Union counties, the drive here is a breeze. There's good restaurants in the area (for a suburb) and it's perfectly safe, even late at night.
    * Chubb's business model is stable and sound. Your 401K is safe with these guys, they'll probably never have to take a bailout and if you get laid off it won't be because of corruption in the C-suite.
    * Data center consolidation and organizational transformation currently in progress means a lot of opportunity for those in the right place at the right time.

Bottom line, if you're looking for a workplace where you're treated like a human being with an employer you'll never be embarrassed of with a suburban Northern/Central NJ location, consider Chubb.

    Cons

    Cons:
    * Low turnover equates to poor career growth for those who do not schmooze their way into the popular boys and girls club.
    * Very frugal when it comes to spending training dollars. Again, bad for career growth.
    * A lot of antiquated technology and immature processes. An IT position at Chubb can hurt your resume more than help it. No one outside Chubb cares that you spent the last three years immersed in Smalltalk. Seriously, no one.
    * Salary and benefits are mediocre.

So having said all that, let me break it down for you in the simplest terms I can muster. If you're a an IT professional with twenty or more years of career to go before you retire in Boca Raton, only work here if you have pre-existing relationships with important people in the company. That will ensure you get the few training dollars that exist and what few promotion opportunities come up. Otherwise, you're just wasting your time here, slowly poisoning your resume but enjoying every moment of it while "Chubb-nice" hypnotizes you into a false sense of complacency.

If, on the other hand, you're near-retirement and just want a place to coast till you hit 65 or 67, then Chubb is perfect.

A new college grad? I won't tell you what to do. They taught you how to read in college so it should be obvious.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire a ton of middle managers for no reason whatsoever. Spark some fear into those who remain so decisions finally start getting made and work finally starts getting done. Slow and deliberate is your style, but 'Chubb-nice' can only be obliterated by some good ol' fashioned slash n' burn.

    Pros

    The benefits are very good

    Cons

The culture is tough. They are clannish and don't like outsiders. They are extremely clickish and will provide negative feedback on new comers. It is more important to fit into the clicks than deliver results. They don't like new comers that are results oriented. What other say about you is the most important thing.
