    Pros

Great workplace, good opportunity to work on new technologies with so many projects in pipeline for next 5 years. Professional employees relationship across company. Decent benefits and very flexible with work location (remote or on site). Global exposure and healthy planning

    Cons

Most of the management is loyal (or well established for retirement) and has been in same position for more than a decade which leaves limited or no growth in career. Not much rotation policy across the company if you need to growth.

    Advice to Management

May be a rotation policy for Directors or above management every two can do wonder and help back-up management in crisis

    Pros

New offices in Baltimore, good benefits, progressive telecommute policy for many employees. Convenient location in the Baltimore/Washington, DC area and easily accessible from major highways.

    Cons

There is a inconsistent track record of bonus payouts and merit increases. Weak management discipline and operational leadership. Unrealistic workload expectations in many departments.

    Advice to Management

Provide growth opportunities for mid-senior leaders. Executive leadership, commitment and focus to meeting business plan objectives should drive improvement in shareholder value and profit sharing with employees.

    Pros

Vacation days and great compensation for the work

    Cons

Continue to place people in management jobs that have no experience in that area, then teams suffer and talent walks.

    Advice to Management

Quit adopting all Nortel ideas and people, keep in mind they were bankrupt and we purchased them. Canada is not the answer.

Good place to learn new things

    Cons

low salaries, no RSUs given only to few people.

    Advice to Management

should identify real performing people and reward them. Internal candidates should be preferred for vacant positions before opening to external .

    Pros

Good benefits, pay is good (top end for our area), and environment is generally healthy. The company has been very good at compensating top performers and hard workers. Lots of average employees whine because they don't get treated like royalty... this company's philosophy is simple: you work hard, you'll be rewarded accordingly. If you're an average producer, you'll see average compensation... and if you don't cut the mustard, you won't last. Simple as that.

Can work from home if desired, and the work schedules are flexible.

    Cons

Workloads are very heavy at times, and the technology is very complicated. Can be overwhelming. Need to hire more people to accomplish all the initiatives in the pipeline.

    Pros

    Good work life balance.

    Cons

Company does not promote from within. Does not try to develop and motivate employees. Moral is low. Compensation is low. Micro managed by management.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within. This motivates employees

    Pros

Flexibility. Training, if manager approves. Nice enough posh buildings.

    Cons

Polite and candid way, of explaining the poor quality of work here, on the IT segment, gets tricky. There are few witty ones, not that. But overall, IT architecture, enterprise systems sucks. Surprisingly for a telecom, IT is not sophisticated. Its just about building something overnight, approving/managing/maintaining poor quality offshore solutions; depending on the title of your profile. No growth. Internal politics, favoritism, grapevines rampant. Quite a few of the managers who have been at Ciena for long, are very unprofessional, reviews on how you accept/adapt to management decisions and offshores, rather than on quality of your work.

    Advice to Management

Internal IT is strength to any company. Respect their observations, facilitate their growth. Offshores can be an operational advantage, but need to be directed/reviewed properly. Giving full control, including Design and Architecture to them, comes at a very expensive cost. Be professionals with corporate ethics. Stick to the positive plans you promise.
