    Sales Manager

    Sales Manager (Former Employee)
    Joliet, IL

    ProsWhen they were around...

Working at Circuit City was a great place. The competitive commission environment taught you how to be aggressive and be the best salesperson you could be.

They helped build great salespeople through training training training. From product training, to one-on-one's with upper management. The Circuit City of the late '90's was an excellent place to work and grow.....until....

ConsThe biggest challenge was overcoming politics, as with any company.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey should have kept the commission environment instead of changing to the Best Buy model...they'd probably still be in business.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

It was a great experience as a high school student

    Sales Associate (Former Employee)

ProsCircuit City had a relaxing environment, offered flexible scheduling, and had young, vibrant employees. Training was easy and concise. The hiring process was also a breeze. I had great supervisors.

ConsThe opportunity to be promoted was not easily offered, and there was not much job security as Circuit City is no longer in business. There could have been better training on the products that we were selling.

Great place to work, but Senior management seemed silly.

ConsBusiness decisions seemed ridiculous, but still a fun place to work.

ConsNo cons, it was just an amazing place to work at.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe bonus structures were great, but I wish there were more incentives.

I miss working for Circuit City

    Car Install Supervisor (Former Employee)
    West Jordan, UT

ProsI liked working here, it was a good laid back working environment.

ConsCould not mange company to keep from going under. Too many top level players giving them selves $500,000 bonuses for just staying with the company for 6 months at the end. A CEO that had TONS of BEST BUY stock while working as CEO for Circuit City. Talk about a conflict of interest.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't go out of business.

    Great place to work!

    Customer Service Associate (Former Employee)
    Enfield, CT

ProsCircuit City was a place where every employee, from Manager to Cashier, felt as though their opportunities were limitless. Everyone was on the same page and it was truly heartbreaking when they filed for bankruptcy. I felt the company had a great future ahead for them and was stunned that they weren't as put together as I thought. They had many ideals that I feel still help me with my current job today.

ConsOf course, retail calls for long days and long nights.

When they had brick and mortar stores and pay was based on commission, the place was decent. Then it got far worse.

    Sales Manager (Former Employee)
    Atlanta, GA

ProsIf you were a good salesperson and energetic, you could make some decent money for an entry level retail sales position when the pay was on a commission basis. There were opportunities for advancement.

ConsThe company let go of most of their good salespeople when they went to an hourly pay rate system. Those people were often some of the more knowledgeable people as well, so that further hurt the customer service. The upper management of the company lacked vision and true leadership; they spent a lot of money on consultants trying to make up for this lack. They were also reactionary rather than proactive in how they managed their business model.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe company has changed to, as I understand it, a web only based company. Not sure if any of the old management came over. I hope not. They needed true leadership, and if my understanding is correct that they no longer have physical stores, their business model would be markedly different.
