    Pros

Good name to have on your CV, good career growth if you have a director who will help you - and you arent in a technical support role (TS).

    Cons

Career growth is slow, pay rises are tough, and there are a lot of people who are "chaff", who are just riding it out for the pension after joining pre 2000 and enjoying the perks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make people move around, having people in the same job for 15 years makes new blood impossible to attract (and retain).

    Great technology, complacent mid-management

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great technical specialists.
Lots of people with tons of experience.
In general people are willing to help/work together.
Good/Great technology that moves in more or less right direction.
    Flexible work option.
    Brand name.

    Cons

Mid-management is getting increasingly politicized (at least in sales). No one really knows what they do.
Visibility is valued over capability, in other words you need to beat your drum relentlessly to advance.
As a result, a lot of good people leaving for a change.
Company is getting old, not enough young people.
More and more people that sort of hide in the shades.
For a network industry leader is pretty bad with product/solution demonstration resources.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Fix the mid-management.
Listen to what individual contributors are saying.
    Stop chasing the consumer market.
Marketing is too "corporate". More substance - less water.
    Sell through demo, not power-point.
    Hire youth.

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Master of your own destiny, company is getting its act together, feel much more a part of 'One Cisco', opportunities for promotion and advancement increasing. Fantastic roadmap, good customer alignment. More of a 'can do' attitude than recent years.

    Cons

Don't trust the senior leadership enough to feel secure in my job, high amount of 'mandatory' internal meetings, very high workload (due to being under-resourced). Compensation still too stock price oriented for SEs - stock options and RSU don't make up for lower base salary in this economic climate. Not attracting top talent any more. Some colleagues are of questionable ability.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look to be more customer focussed, focus on attracting top talent.

Great company that has a bright future but boy do they go about things the hard way

Former Employee - Services Sales in London, England (UK)

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Outstanding product portfolio
Significant presence in the IT market
    Client credibility
    Global operational capability
    Internal resource pool
    Financial rewards
    London office location
Calibre of most of the service delivery personnel

    Cons

    Complex internal systems
Quality of management not as high as one would expect
Compared to other IT companies there is little opportunity for personal development
Legacy approach to support services is archaic
Services product portfolio and supporting tools are far to complex. Cisco tries to fit what they have to meet the client needs rather than build exactly what the client wants.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The numbers are important but they should not be the prime focus. Get out and see more clients.

Move the middle management around to find the weak managers

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great place to work, A large corporate with very good benefits.

    Cons

Small cog in a big machine - middle management are under motivated and over payed. Thus lack the dedication required to support your personal career growth. The work life balance doesn't exsist for many, but this is compounded by the fact that others in the same teams and roles get away with doing very little, and it is never picked up by management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Discussions with management end with management telling what they think you want to hear and then do nothing to back it up over the next cycle. Move middle management around - especially in the support roles.

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Highly collaborative environment and opportunity to work with some of industry's top performers
Potential opportunities to grow, especially in Services business
    Great benefits package

    Cons

Lots of change ongoing - probably par for the industry but feels relentless and sometimes difficult to see how it relates to positive development apart from senior exec positioning

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow time for change to bed in (and measure benefit) before next cavalcade

    Cons

Some roles are less accountable and people have less of an impact on the final outcome than it should be.
Internal systems and processes are horrendous.

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

An incredible degree of flexibility and innovation in all aspects of the business combined with a strong focus on employee development.

    Cons

Your experience will largely depend on your manager. A good manager will take you far, whereas a weak manager will impede your career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to your managers--retaliation and favoritism are rife, and have the potential to damage your business and your brand going forward.

Current Employee - Senior Marketing Manager in London, England (UK)

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There are plenty of good people and a decent salary range. There are good benefits and an innovative culture that allows flexible working to a degree though there are nice office locations too that have plenty of drop-in workspaces. you can get a lot of autonomy which leads to good prospects to move internally or take on new projects.

    Cons

higher management is slightly over-heavy though this is getting better, a tendency for people to stay a long time so upward movement can sometimes be difficult

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

move around more, create the space for people to grow
