Short. I was only employed there for two months before management decided to go their separate ways.

    Software Engineer (Former Employee)
    Research Triangle Park, NC

ProsIf you are able to hit the ground running on your first day and able to get through training quickly than this is the career for you.

ConsThe team that I was in wasn't sociable and none of the interns on the team said that they had a fun time working there.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt would probably help the new hire to not be thrown to the wolves in the middle of a project.

Large slow moving ship with a lot of talent but poor an execution

    Program Manager (Current Employee)
    Research Triangle Park, NC

ProsJob Security is above average. Befits are good, Choices for Health Life, Dental and Vision. Stock options are not offered anymore. Employee stock purchase program is good. Training and education are Very good. Diverse culture. Employee's are encouraged to expand and move out of their box into other areas to get ahead. Salary is average or just above average. Cisco is a VERY very large company so experiences and situations will vary depending on location. In The United States, East Coast RTP TAC has some of the most intelligent people on earth. They are good at what they do and they enjoy doing it.

ConsCompensation is lacking. Once you branch out of the lower levels such as support you start to run into road blocks. The company is VERY political internally. Management is great , above average at talk on ideas and planning but lacks the ability to create a complete strategy and execute on it. The company as of 2014 is facing its greatest challenge. Share holders want to see double digit returns on the core business, Routing and Switching. These are based on bare metal products. Bare metal is going away. Amazon and Google have already eroded some of this. Cisco does have a cloud strategy however its late unproven, and complex and full of issues. Cisco will fall behind in 2014 so do not expect a great deal of hiring. Bonus Compensation is based on performance and for FY13 this was sub par. Looking into FY14 this trend is expected to continue, companies own words. Same CEO has been had the helm since day 1. CEO and top tier base strategy on acquisitions. This is has stopped working. Simply buying a product or company does not make the grade anymore you have to be able to align and execute. Cisco is in a free-fall in this respect. From a Services perspective Cisco is missing the boat. The company has yet to figure out how to deliver on this. Then again so has its competitors.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop talking and start doing. You have Vision but no working strategy and nothing to execute on. Enough with the power points lets get the ball rolling. Idle minds and Idle hands lead to problems. Stop cutting us into a corner to improve numbers. Cisco is not broke.

Still a great place to work, but things have been going downhill for a while...

    Technical Lead (Current Employee)
    Research Triangle Park, NC

ProsWork on new technologies and equipment. Decent work/life balance, decent salary.

ConsYearly lay-offs. Seemingly little or no cohesion between BUs. The drive to push all engineering over to Bangalore.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop with the daft acquisitions and outsourcing the work..

Tell JC to stop spouting nonsense about the "cisco family" we may have believed him in 2001, not anymore.

Have someone..anyone to make the BUs talk to each other.

Cisco RTP is a GREAT place to work!

    Business Development Manager (Former Employee)
    Research Triangle Park, NC

ProsFlexibility of working remotely.........Cisco provides CVO routers and equipment for your home office. With WebEx and your camera you feel connected at all times

Cons........you feel connected at all times............my job was global so the hours can be long

'collaboration' is excessive. A leader needs to step up an make decisions.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake decisions faster!
Don't give your CEO an 80% raise the day before a major employee layoff and say it was because of his past year accomplishments............who were the workers for those accomplishments????

    Great experience overall

NCE and Technical Leader (Former Employee)
    Research Triangle Park, NC

ProsCisco is very successful and shares that success with their employees.

ConsCollaboration is a little harder. People are willing to help, but people tend to work solo. There is an ethic of "research it yourself" that can be counter productive in some cases.
