With all the contractors in IT, there is a huge amount of white space to be managed by actual employees.

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    Solid and well-respected company.
Willing to invest in development and training (if applicable to position)
    Decent salary and fair benefits

    Cons

Alot of busy work... with considerable work put into backward looking quarterly status reports.
Certain tension between business units and IT

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Manage based on what the team is supposed to do, get involved with team activity, issues, and challenges; don't spend so much time in meetings and administrative distractions that does not directly contribute to that mission.

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Exciting engaging work with solid peers and managers. May opportunities to do something different in either bleeding edge or solid workhorse technology. Solid compensation package.

    Cons

Too addicted to using layoffs to stay competitive instead of investing more in training and developing a learning culture like GE.

Lost it's fun factor. Most of the fun elements once standard at Cisco, and common in many Bay Area companies are all gone.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reconsider your strategies for how to remain viable with the latest technology. Invest more in people vs layoffs.

I worked at Cisco Systems as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Have a great chance of moving up, awesome resources for personal growth, cool culture and atmosphere while training and on the floor. People were always willing to help, you were not left stranded after hitting the floor.

    Cons

Inadequate compensation, can sometimes feel like a hostile environment, not enough staff on our team, and slow to replace those laid off.
