I have been working at Cisco Systems (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good Pay, Mostly smart workforce, good technology

    Cons

Success is managed to the point that you can't do great, but won't do bad either. Big company BS. Sausage is ugly to watch being made

    Pros

    People are brilliant and fun.

    Cons

Very bureaucratic and political. If you can navigate those areas of political landmines, Cisco is a great company. My experience overall was quite positive. It all comes down to your manager.

I worked at Cisco Systems as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Good opportunities to do impactful work for Cisco's customers, plus great co-workers make the day-to-day work enjoyable and successful. Just an aside: Cisco's quality cafeterias serve delicious breakfasts and lunches to fuel all the extra PowerPoint slides you'll have to complete.

    Cons

Management needs everything translated into PowerPoint to understand SW development status; unfortunately, they don't understand typical Agile, bug or analytics reports. It will seem like you have to do twice as much work to complete a task: once to complete the actual work product, then a second time to redo things in PowerPoint for your manager.

    Advice to Management

Learn some modern Agile/Scrum management skills so that your employees can be more a lot productive.

    Pros

Great company, lots of opportunities and chance to explore different routes from development perspective

    Cons

Depending on the group the expectation are unrealistic.

    Advice to Management

Remove some middle level managers as they are more overhead then needed and also don't truly provide the right level of management

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It's fairly easy to have a long, rewarding career at Cisco. Just do good work and keep your head down, and they'll take care of you.

    Cons

Annual layoffs. Management regularly balances the books by reducing headcount. If you're a strong performer in engineering, you're probably safe. But no one is untouchable if your entire business unit gets shut down.
