    Pros

Great company and full of talented people. Great compensation and benefits. Everyone loves John Chambers and Gary Moore and SVP management is solid. Hard working but well rewarding.

    Cons

It's getting to be a large company so politics are pretty much a part of the business. Starting to lose the difference between perception of and getting actual work done. Repeated layoffs have demoralized the employees. The company is going through the biggest transformation and it will be interesting to see if they succeed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to motivate employees in after repeated lay offs. Figure out cloud strategy once and for all...from the inside it does not seem organized. Watch for politics...it's getting a bit much!

    Pros

Good benefit and nice people working around, flexible working hours. Good inside training opportunities.

    Cons

Slow paced, projects vary by teams. Some may get pretty cutting-edge projects, some might not. Infrequent incentive and promotions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

need to keep up with the market, salary wise and benefit wise, to keep great talents stay, also, the management structure needs to get more flat.

I have been working at Cisco Systems

    Pros

22 days of vacation per year, allows work from home, 100% 401K matching, great healthcare, good work-life balance, one of the best companies I have worked for.

    Cons

Pay raises are difficult to obtain, promotions are difficult to obtain, layoffs are announced every year so there is the stress of wondering if you'll get RIFed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get back to the companies core business and try to focus more on quality of the products.

Current Employee - Senior Software Development Manager in San Jose, CA

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Top leader in networking: switching, routing. Customer focused. Employee is empowered to take ownership, risks.
Very loyal customer base. Overall quality of product is pretty good.

    Cons

Law of size is catching up (70k+ employee), becoming less agile and too many failed projects. Considered more of a hardware focused networking company than software/application providers. Diluted responsibility in senior executive level of management

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great opportunities for a wide variety of work, good compensation and stock options, can move into management if that's what you want to do or advance along a technical track. The campus is located in San Jose which has pretty good public transportation, plenty of parking around the buildings in the campus.

    Cons

Long hours, short deadlines, 24 x 7 on call.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company could be more family friendly. If both parents work, it's hard to get away sometimes.

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Cisco is a company with good culture, good benefits, good pay and flexible work hours.

    Cons

    1. There is a great wastage of talent, skills and work. Multiple teams, multiple people work on solving same problems, using same technologies in complete isolation with each other.

    2. The way the information is shared between teams is extremely inefficient and outdated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too many projects get cancelled after 1,2,3 years of engineering work. Some of these are acceptable, but, if 50% or more new projects get canceled after 1 year of more of investment, it indicates a need for better planning.

Current Employee - Senior Manager, Strategy and Operations in San Jose, CA

I have been working at Cisco Systems

    Pros

Good people- majority of my managers and employees have been smart and self motivated. People care about their jobs, care about their co-workers, care about the community.

Love the moto: "Best in the world, Best for the world". Relentless focus on execution, without losing need to do good in the world.

Great work-life balance. Employees work hard, but flex time is the norm. Very common to have 7am calls, 7pm calls, but also ok to be coaching soccer at 4pm, or at doctor's appt with your mother in the middle of the day

    Cons

Many people have been here a long time- there's a sense of entitlement amongst those here 20+ years. Some complacency, related to above.

Hard to move up- promotions to director level and above seems to require inside connections.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the relentless focus on execution. Great leadership at the top- John is always full of passion and energizes the employees.

Keep up with the senior leadership changes. Love Fran Katsoudas as head of HR- very smart, very authentic, willing to take risks and change the status quo. Hire and promote more women, minorities, young employees.
