    Pros

    I have been welcomed by a friendly environment. Serious professionals collaborative and helpful.
    My team was responsible for a trading application and sometimes it was stressful, with long hours and some calls outside working times.
    Average-low compensation compared with other investment banks.

    Cons

    Sometimes I felt lack of guidance from management, and it was not always clear who was responsible for what.
    Dealing with the corporate intranet is a nightmare, and most contacts with the people supporting the IT infrastructure were fruitless or worse.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Make en effort to promote meritocracy at every level.
    Improve corporate processes and the IT infrastructure.

    Pros

    Large mutltinational corporation/multicultural so diversified in it's employee intake.

    Cons

    Few opportunities for graduates in the long-run if recruited via a non-graduate management programme; difficult to move into parallel project roles despite having the skills (analytical etc.) /intellectual rigour;

    In a nutshell;

    ~ Senior management could not care less what goes on downstream as long as it is not affecting their power grip on the organization and end-of-year bonus;
    ~ Middle management are clueless, the majority are without formal education (professional or otherwise), preferring to hang around their peers with whom they have formed industry bonds (and feel comfortable) whilst maintaining the status-quo;
    ~ At lower levels, mediocre staff (majority school leavers in Back/Office/Ops) who have been allowed to stay on for years but escape redundancy because judged too expensive to get the sack (although that trend is slowly phasing with offshoring to India).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Graduates that are educated and smart will not stay without decent career prospects, 3-4 years is the maximum time one can spend in a firm without promotion/pay rise. BAU becomes unbearable after a while and so does shift work.

    Pros

    Great exposure to projects and software systems if you are willing to sacrifice your life.

    Cons

    Very little opportunity for reward or recognition if you are not part of the "clique". Suggest avoiding like the plague. Senior Management lack direction, and your peers are likely to kick back and watch you do all the work and then take credit for it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Stop allowing the employment of incompetent people just because they are friends of friends, and ensure rewarding the best individuals to retain talent. Set a clear career path, and make sure goals are fair and attainable, and not used to hold individuals back.

    Pros

    It is a truly global organisation so there are genuine opportunities to move departments and/or location.

    I thought their systems were antiquated, but now I am working at a much smaller bank I realise Citi are pretty cutting edge in comparison (but definitely not perfect!)

    Cons

    A large amount of red tape, sometimes making it difficult to get your job done.

    Salary package behind market rate.

    Some departments within the bank are very "corporate" others are more relaxed, it's a lottery

    Off shoring of many back office processes makes it difficult to get things done.

    Pros

    Its a huge company so you get lots of mobility. The company has one of the most diverse workforce's in the world. Whilst base is generally under market they can flex the bonus pot to your advantage to ensure overall comp keeps up (in a good year)

    Cons

    VERY Long hours. overall performance of the firm really impacts comp. HR dept is poor in supporting staff. If you have Lehman's on your CV you seem to do well at the expense of harder working employees. Very much a blame culture and not very collaborative to get the job done. Its all about dodging the buses people are trying to throw each other under.

    Take a look at long time staff who are leaving and understand why that is.

    Pros

    Truly global organisation with networks anywhere you could imagine doing business. Compared to other monoline investment banks the breadth of product offerings helps differentiate Citi. Lots of very smart, driven people which makes it a fulfilling place to work.

    Cons

    Very bureaucratic organisation. I'm sure other large investment banks aren't dis-similar in this regard, the key difference being when you need to cut through the red tape to get something done for a client at Citi you aren't able to- which I don't think is the case at GS, JPM, etc.

    Huge global company with opportunities in every major country and multiple business lines.

    Cons

    Depending on business, long hours are expected. Budget has been tight impacting ability to innovate/automate. Gap is closing on pay compared to other firms.

    Implement career management to help guide employees through intra-departmental transitions (specifically back/middle office jobs).
