I have been working at Citi full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

You work with hard working, dedicated people who, in my experience, are always willing to help. Great cohesion between various teams. Broad geographic reach gives rotation opportunities, but they are hard to get.

    Cons

Seniors don't take juniors to pitches enough. Lack of structured program to develop juniors into strong bankers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have a clear plan for developing talent. Too many people I've worked with have left simply out of not being satisfied with client exposure / development.

Dead for technology in London (CATE)

I worked at Citi full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good Salary, outstanding technical staff (those who haven't been made redundant yet), good package, nice location, good work/life balance.

    Cons

If you want to work in IT technology/engineering in London then forget it. The company is refocussing on low cost locations just as every other major financial is doing the opposite. Absolutely stunning lack of imagination and creativity in management (based in the US). No one really knows what the direction is for technology because the man in charge is seaweed, he goes whichever way the current is flowing that day and changes according the changing current the following day. During a 30 year career I've yet to see such inept management and it beggars belief that they survive. If there isn't a major IT catastrophe in the next year or so it will only be because enough of the true stars on the ground are still there patching the gaping holes while they wait for the golden ticket to arrive. Zero paid training ever, siloing of talent endemic, opportunities for changing roles non existent unless you fancy moving to India.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get someone in on the ground who knows what the hell they're doing, get them to identify the deadwood at senior management levels and move them on and keep more of the people who actually can do the job and make a difference beyond producing reams of Powerpoint slides to be delivered in a tortuous 2 hour monotone monolog. Invest in the established technology hubs that got the bank where it is and don't risk it all on a cheap unproven alternatives. If you don't it will come back and bite you in a big way.

I worked at Citi as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Feels like a flat organization. I had the chance to meet a great number of people from a variety of different levels.

    Cons

I can see that because the culture of the team/department I was in seemed so laid back that I could unintentionally get complacent.

I have been working at Citi full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

It is a great place to work. It will provide opportunities for a successful career to anyone with the desire and drive to do so. A vast global network with numerous opportunities, always willing to provide those that want it with assistance to grow professionally.

    Cons

Can be political at times, but this will depend on who your boss and peers are.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remove the vested interest of those who have been at the institution for too long, and the people who lack the academic as well as professional background/mentality/work ethic that banks have strived to garner in the last few decades.

    Pros

    - You learn a lot
    - You are given responsibility early
    - You're trained by the best
    - Meritocratic place most of the times

    Cons

    - Aggressive, cut-throat office culture
    - Hard to get time off
    - Top management couldn't care less about employees
    - A completely money driven place (all we do is for the bonus, all the actions/poor actions are measured against your expected bonus

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on getting the culture right. Don't try to be a nicer Goldman Sachs as this won't work

Former Employee - Senior Java Developer in London, England (UK)

I worked at Citi full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

I have been welcomed by a friendly environment. Serious professionals collaborative and helpful.
My team was responsible for a trading application and sometimes it was stressful, with long hours and some calls outside working times.
Average-low compensation compared with other investment banks.

    Cons

Sometimes I felt lack of guidance from management, and it was not always clear who was responsible for what.
Dealing with the corporate intranet is a nightmare, and most contacts with the people supporting the IT infrastructure were fruitless or worse.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make en effort to promote meritocracy at every level.
Improve corporate processes and the IT infrastructure.

Former Employee - Senior Analyst in London, England (UK)

I worked at Citi full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great exposure to projects and software systems if you are willing to sacrifice your life.

    Cons

Very little opportunity for reward or recognition if you are not part of the "clique". Suggest avoiding like the plague. Senior Management lack direction, and your peers are likely to kick back and watch you do all the work and then take credit for it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop allowing the employment of incompetent people just because they are friends of friends, and ensure rewarding the best individuals to retain talent. Set a clear career path, and make sure goals are fair and attainable, and not used to hold individuals back.
