I worked at Citi full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

If you have an understanding of front office, finance, and technical skills (savvy Excel user and VBA) you can change processes / add value / undertake projects with significant exposure to senior management.

    Cons

Many employees including managers have a very poor understanding of technology, which creates opportunity but also frustration as managerial support is hard to rally. The bureaucracy at such a large firm is expected, but I am still shocked by how long simple changes take to execute.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management should embrace technology or at least come to terms that they do not understand technology and should defer to more junior people who do.

I have been working at Citi

    Pros

Citi does very well to invest in its juniors, and there's a focus on retaining some for eventual promotion. Some other firms 100% assume that as an analyst, you're not going to stay and therefore will not invest in you as heavilty (e.g. client exposure). Most banks on the Street, Citi included, however, are supportive or their analyst recruiting after their 2-year program.

    Cons

Despite its excellent training for analysts, Citi has had some trouble with managing its brand, especially with how much change the organization has gone through in the past several years following the collapse. Pay traditionally has lagged behind the street, but recently there has been some effort to match the street.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more attention to maintaining and promoting a sustainable franchise that is not solely focused on short term gains.

I have been working at Citi

    Pros

Flexible. Depending on your area, good work/life balance. Working remotely is not discouraged. Time off is pretty generous depending on your title.

    Cons

Very top heavy and layered. Not much room for growth. Never feel comfortable with restructuring and layoffs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pick a direction and stick to it for a while. Be more concerned with your business instead of following competitors a step or two behind.

    Cons

Was in a large cubicle farm; Ran out of work to do; Technology stack was not always to my interest; Lots of outdated code in production, and parts of code base were overly complicated; Working with business side could be frustrated.
