I have been working at Citi full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good company if you want to rebuild things. So many broken issues and process still today. Salary good, senior mgmt has a vision just not executing at well as it should be.

    Cons

Still operates in silos. No coordination and working together between groups. Still has legacy culture where things are "always done this way" in certain areas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I know we want employees to think and act like owners but most don't. Should give mid to lower level employees stock purchase plan like other companies so employees will feel more like owners and probably care more. Cap one and chase offers stock purchase plans at discount to encourage stock ownership for all employees not just senior execs.

    Pros

Direct managers understand work/life balance. In general they provide good leadership for the team. Benefits are good but not great.

    Cons

Constant reorganization within the divisions which leads to job insecurity and tension. Job cuts reduced staff, increasing the hours worked by the people still on the team.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider more AWS for IT personnel as a means to retain more experienced ans skilled employees.

I worked at Citi as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Nice building, very diverse. People from all over.

    Cons

The AML dept at Citi is very dysfunctional. They are either going through a transition phase or this is how it is regularly, not sure. Was hired as a temp and was encouraged that I would get hired and that Citi looks to hire temps more than let them go. When I started, I was barely given any kind of training. It lasted for about a week and was very generic, didn't go into much detail. As I worked, Quality Assurance reviews everything, which is fine. However, management nor the analyst who are permanent employees don't seem to know what would be considered right or wrong. When you get something wrong, you are penalized for that, however it is hard to correct something or do something the right way when your own manager and experienced employees don't know what's correct. And when you do have a question, no one is ever around to help. When they are around, they tell you to ask an analyst....which puts you in jeopardy of getting things wrong. They have no direction, there is no opportunity for advancement. They tell you there is but analysts have been there forever and are still doing the same thing. High turnover, it seems every week someone is leaving. If you don't hit your numbers (which are unrealistic btw, 150 cases a day), you are scolded and threatened to do more. Constantly watched, management is also very secretive about things and won't tell you much. Lots of office politics. In other words, its not worth it and Citi knows that, that's why they are constantly hiring, because people are constantly leaving.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look over your procedures, figure out what you actually want from an employee. Update your systems, its not the 1980s anymore. Give your analyst updated information that we can actually use. You're so stuck in procedures that people in the real world with common sense look at you and think "this makes zero sense". It's not rocket science even tho you make it out to be that way.

Learnt a lot, but too many layers of management and conflicting egos led to a lack of clear direction and strategy.

I worked at Citi full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

You can learn a lot in which ever field you choose to specialise in. Ample opportunity to change departments to gain a new skill.

    Cons

Senior management are too focussed on keeping the shareholders happy. The desire to see a share price increase quarter on quarter, leads to short term planning, and quick fixes. To get promoted up the ranks you need to know people and be prepared to brown nose, rather than letting you ability and performance speak for themselves.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Strip out the layers upon layers of management. Focus on getting the job done, rather than the share price.
