I worked at Citi as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Nice building, very diverse. People from all over.

    Cons

The AML dept at Citi is very dysfunctional. They are either going through a transition phase or this is how it is regularly, not sure. Was hired as a temp and was encouraged that I would get hired and that Citi looks to hire temps more than let them go. When I started, I was barely given any kind of training. It lasted for about a week and was very generic, didn't go into much detail. As I worked, Quality Assurance reviews everything, which is fine. However, management nor the analyst who are permanent employees don't seem to know what would be considered right or wrong. When you get something wrong, you are penalized for that, however it is hard to correct something or do something the right way when your own manager and experienced employees don't know what's correct. And when you do have a question, no one is ever around to help. When they are around, they tell you to ask an analyst....which puts you in jeopardy of getting things wrong. They have no direction, there is no opportunity for advancement. They tell you there is but analysts have been there forever and are still doing the same thing. High turnover, it seems every week someone is leaving. If you don't hit your numbers (which are unrealistic btw, 150 cases a day), you are scolded and threatened to do more. Constantly watched, management is also very secretive about things and won't tell you much. Lots of office politics. In other words, its not worth it and Citi knows that, that's why they are constantly hiring, because people are constantly leaving.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look over your procedures, figure out what you actually want from an employee. Update your systems, its not the 1980s anymore. Give your analyst updated information that we can actually use. You're so stuck in procedures that people in the real world with common sense look at you and think "this makes zero sense". It's not rocket science even tho you make it out to be that way.

I worked at Citi full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    - global
    - recognized talent
    - the brand is better outside the U.S.
    - paid well
    - emphasis on stock price

    Cons

    - need to deliver on earnings (stock price) led to downfall of company
    - travelers management u.s. centric and weak; total reliance on substantial talents of Sandy Weill
    - merger was a disaster for both parties (travellers’s and citicorp)
    - matrix management - invested at GM - drove Citi into insolvency

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Hold specific line managers responsible for results.

    2. End management by committee (matrix management …. see GM)

    3. Rebuild back the global consumer bank.

    4. Trade Banamex for U.S. Bancorp

I worked at Citi full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great company to get your foot in the door and learn about how a big business works. Time off and benefits are a plus.

    Cons

If you move up in the company you need to be aware of sharks. The politics can be cut throat and many times escape-goats are used. Not everyone has good business ethics.
