Pros
International recognition of the bank and your work
Ability to work with a high calibre of individuals
Excellent mental challenge
Department management very approachable
Cons
Management training is limited to senior management. Low-level management (i.e. team leaders) typically receive no guidance as to how to mentor their junior team members. Some individuals are very good mentors, others are awful. As a graduates therefore your career progression can be a lottery - i.e. it depends on who you get as your direct boss, and often you do not have a chance to rotate around teams.
At times there is a perception that career progression and salary increases are gained by threatening to leave rather than being loyal to the business. A classic characteristic of the financial services industry.
Senior management turnover has been to high in the past
Working in Canary Wharf
Pros
Generally easy going environment, mainly because management doesn't care
Easy to get time off as no senior management works much
Cons
Low morale
Random approach to risk
constantly changing market views means that no one really has any idea what risk is ok
Advice to Senior Management
Fix technology, create a real risk system, try to keep a consistent approach to risk, stop randomly firing good people while keeping weak managers
Pros
Fairly reasonable work to private life ratio.
You can work remotely at times and thus avoid always having to be in the office.
Cons
Some employees are doing most if not all of the work while others hardly doing anything at all. They are being paid to just show up thereby by placing an unfair burden on others who are forced to work that much harder and pick up more than one's fair share of the workload.
Management is distance and hardly even acknowledges you. Forget ever getting a hello or goodbye if you're not on the VP level or higher.
Advice to Senior Management
Insure that everyone is doing his/her fair share of the work.
Pay attention to the "little" people a little more - when it comes to shelling out the money at the end of the year - don't keep it all for yourself.
Pros
Big bank. Good exposure. Multiple choices for career transitions.
Cons
Too many systems. Red tape as with all big companies.
Pros
strong fixed income trading desk
talented senior individuals
not laggards with changes in the industry
Cons
not a lean organization
lots of bueaurarcy
Advice to Senior Management
continue to rebrand the image...and beat BofAML!
Pros
good training program and nice team environment
Cons
low efficiency as in large corporation
Advice to Senior Management
improve efficiency
Pros
Good scope to learn finance principles
Cons
High hours and high pressure environment
Pros
Good pay, clear goals, highly experienced co-workers, lots of time off, cutting edge technology, very relaxed dress code, always challenging
Cons
There is very little room to move up. Most US holidays are still trading days so you end up working a few.
Advice to Senior Management
Management does very well here. My only advice would be to get the cafeteria back. And spend just a little more time listening to employee ideas.
Pros
1) Global exposure (distributed teams, multi-market, etc.)
2) Huge org (opportunities for advancement for performers)
3) Diversity of staff and technology
Cons
Complex to navigate politically, a club mentality continues to remain as new clubs come in and kick-out the old (cycle repeats).
Advice to Senior Management
Increase emphasis on process and lose distaste for strong lower-middle management.
Pros
Big firm, involved in a lot of markets
Cons
May be easy to get lost, hard to meet other groups, have to be very proactive to meet people
