I have been working at City Schools of Decatur full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Opportunities to learn and collaborate, highly committed educators who genuinely care about students, the community and each other. The culture of the school is welcoming.

    Cons

Constant rate of change within GA and the district. Teachers have a new evaluation system, new curriculum, and administrators. The growth of the school system causes anxiety because the students won't fit in our current facilites and yet the city continues to move toward annexation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Package change in manageable ways--help teachers focus by handling issues that are not about instruction. Change is hard so communicate effectively while also being efficient and economical. Protect teachers from new initiatives.

I have been working at City Schools of Decatur

    Pros

    High quality faculty and staff.

    Cons

Working for the state of Georgia brings it's cons, being a teacher you are at the mercy of the state and national legislature. There is always some new program, evaluation system, or change in standards that makes it hard to find time to actually teach and plan for that teaching!

I have been working at City Schools of Decatur full-time

    Pros

Great work environment. Great people to work with, even though it doesn't seem like you are working but instead like collaborating with family members. Great community involvement with the school system.

    Cons

I can't really think of any cons, but I am typing this because section had a 20 word minimum.

I have been working at City Schools of Decatur as a contractor (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great benefits. Paid sick leave, personal days, great health insurance at low cost, great working hours, summers and holidays off with pay.

    Cons

I am "support staff", and not a teacher, so my salary is very low (around 12k per year). The benefits sort of balance that out though.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

How about actually handing out some sort of punishment to the kids when they cuss us out, throw things at us, ect.? Makes for a rough day when you have to put up with that.

I have been working at City Schools of Decatur

    Pros

    Kids are awesome..
Education is a priority in the community
Lots of opportunities for professional development
    Co-workers are very hard working.

    Cons

Parents can be stressful to deal with
Management of schools is very hierarchical
    Union is not very strong
There is not much support for teachers who are struggling

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Decatur City Schools are a great place to send your kids to school, but the stress on teachers is unfortunately extremely high, and they are not always supported when they need help from higher-ups. Work/life balance is very good...keep up the good work. Consider involving teachers in the decision making process and not imposing surprises on them.
