Incredibly challenging, but it will most certainly change your life.

    Corps Member (Current Employee)
    Detroit, MI

ProsYou will look back at the year and be proud of yourself. You get to work full-time in incredibly challenged schools (no teaching experience required), work alongside some of the most inspiring people you could meet, and have access to tons of opportunities to grow yourself professionally and as a leader.

ConsAt times you'll get frustrated with City Year as an organization, but it's a non-profit and you have to be able to let those things go if you want to keep your sanity. If you can do that, you'll be just fine.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe grateful for and respectful to corps members who give a year of their lives

    Unrewarding

    Corps Member (Current Employee)

    Pros-Work with kids
-met some friends through school teams

ConsUnsustainable model in which corps members leave after usually 1 year when students they work with are kind of left to fend for themselves

Advice to Senior ManagementGood intentions but horrible outcome. Be honest and understand the long-term negative implications to the organization.

Rewarding service, if you can keep your heart in it.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThe opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others while being supported by a caring staff and team.

ConsPay is low, and hours can be long. Very easy to burn out, or to retreat into cynicism. City Year has an extremely strong culture that may not be for everyone.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Long and helpful journey

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsCity Year is an organization that helps you grow in personal and professional ways. The people working there believe in the mission and each other which allows you to have a shared experience and many mentors. You have many opportunities available to you which can leave you feeling drained and tired, but it is worth the journey.

ConsAs with any organization, there are internal politics and some people that do not live up to the values which, depending on the level of those individuals, can pollute the working environment. With the stress and intensity of the work people can make poor choices and harm relationships. As a whole though, the people working their try to keep the working environment positive.

Advice to Senior ManagementFewer goals and more on-going professional development on helping people with leading and management skills will continue to help the "Cons" mentioned here.

One of the most intense years of my life

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsWorking with a team of peers, a sense of making a difference in the lives of children, personal growth, and knowing that you are capable of so much.

ConsThe hours are ridiculously long and expectations are high, because it's a volunteer program the financial help is very small, and burnout.

Advice to Senior ManagementIn terms of hours, you have to remember that cops members are people and that they WILL perform worse if they burn out.

The staff are great (passionate, supportive, positive) but the leadership lacks consistency and relationship.

Powerful service performed by normal people.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsYou get to see a lot of issues with education, and then be able to work with a team to try to address these issues. A lot of different outlooks, a lot of different people, from different environments, all coming together to make our cities a better place. It's like an ultimate team.

ConsYou are kept extremely busy, and if your heart isn't in the service, you will not make it. You will cry, you will want to scream, but by the end of the day, if you have made impact on at least one kid, to have one kid tell you that you made their life better, it all becomes worth it.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the powerful service and make sure that your Corps Members feel that you are there with them in their service.
