I have been working at City of Akron full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

For the most part, I have been allowed to grow and develop as a planning professional.

    Cons

Policies regarding advancement is structured and subject to stagnatation instead of proactive growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is indeed a structure regarding advancement....depending on department and experience, a person could end up stuck in one position for an extended period of time, regardless of certifications or licences obtained.

I have been working at City of Akron full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The city offers excellent benefits with great rates. It is also nice that you are guareteed a raise yearly for the first seven years you are in a position. Time Bank is also a great asset because you do not need to worry about missing pay if you have an unexpected illness or surgery

    Cons

No room for advancement. Many of departments within the city offer little room for advancement. There are few managment level jobs and a large number of employees are stuck in the same position for their entire career.

I have been working at City of Akron full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Interacting with people from all aspects of life and protecting the public from harm. The feeling of gratification after solving a crime or finding the suspect of a crime

    Cons

Dealing with the emotional aftermath of violent criminal behavior, accepting the worse of the worse when it pertains to criminals, also there is a political aspect to being a police officer and sometimes it comes before serving the public's best interest.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maintain a healthy work-life balance, in law enforcement this may be an obstacle due to work elated stress. Time off is never static, you can be called in to cover a low manpower shift.
